Job Description

This is an outstanding development opportunity for a talented individual who wishes to advance excellent and innovative education. We are seeking an individual to contribute and deliver the PGT Nurse or Midwife Independent and Supplementary Prescribing module. The successful applicant will work collaboratively with our Health Faculties to deliver joint education and lead innovations in prescribing education for the pre and post-registration programmes.

Prescribing is integral to the established and highly evaluated MSc Advanced Clinical Practice programme. The programme supports nurses, pharmacists, and allied health professionals to progress to senior practitioner level and beyond by providing a flexible and accessible framework from which they acquire and demonstrate 21st century transferable knowledge and competence.

The focus of the role is to deliver outstanding education on the Nurse or Midwife Independent and Supplementary Prescribing module, review and develop innovative education for pre-registration programmes related to prescribing practice and ensure the Nurse or Midwife Independent and Supplementary Prescribing module and related activity is compliant with the NMC (2019) standards for Prescribing programmes.

As an Academic Education Pathway (AEP) Lecturer, the successful candidates would be expected to have a particular focus on education and teaching in their role. We are seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated educator who can make a distinctive contribution, bridging theory and practice, and inspiring and informing students from a wide range of international backgrounds. As an Education and Research(E&R) Lecturer, the successful candidates would be expected to win high quality peer reviewed research funding, conduct research at internationally excellent and world-leading levels to be published in major academic journals, and deliver inspiring undergraduate and postgraduate education in their fields and of relevance to the Faculty.

The successful candidates will hold a PhD (E&R) or MSc (AEP) or equivalent in a healthcare discipline, with an excellent knowledge and understanding of a relevant field of expertise.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract pending successful completion of probation (3 years) The post-holder is required to actively participate in academic performance development review (PDR) annually.

Those on the Academic Education pathway contract have an 80% teaching/20% scholarship contribution.

Those on the Education and Research pathway contract have a 60% research/40% education contribution.

This is a full-time post, however, we offer flexibility for part-time working.


Key responsibilities

Play an active role in NMPC and King’s undergraduate and postgraduate education, focussed on the programmes. This will include module and programme leadership, developing and delivering high quality innovative education and relevant materials, including incorporating King’s and Faculty research, pastoral support, supervision, and assessment and generating excellent student success and feedback. Have a clear forward plan for sustaining and enhancing NMPC education and/or PhD supervision consistent with our strategy, including to increase research and evidence informed education, multi- and interdisciplinary endeavours, digital offerings and improved student success and experience.

Main other responsibilities

  • Deliver outstanding education for relevant programmes based on best evidence, health policy and research
  • Actively participate in, and where appropriate plan and lead relevant modules and teaching programmes at King’s, with a strong focus on excellent student experience, seeking opportunities for efficiencies with other modules and programmes
  • Communicate and collaborate with students, patients, families, the public, policy makers and clinical colleagues and in research and teaching, and its relevance to care and policy.
  • Work in collaboration and partnership with key stakeholders, institutions, and organisations
  • Actively participate in marking, course and programme development, assessment, module leadership, personal tutoring and project supervision
  • Proactively collaborate with research and teaching staff within the Faculty, across the University, and where appropriate lead collaborative developments
  • Actively engage in Patient and Public Involvement and imbed this into all research projects and teaching endeavours.
  • Engage with the media, press, publicity, policy makers, practitioners, and others to deliver impact of the research and teaching to the benefit of patients, families, and society.
  • Play a broader role in the Faculty, contributing to the growth and development of our people and the wider organisation as appropriate to role.
  • Actively participate in relevant audit and clinical governance activity, including audit of research and teaching activity, and team building activities
  • Champion, model and uphold King’s values and principles, and maintain highest standards of adherence to data protection, ethical and research governance principles and practices
  • Have and maintain an honorary contract if required,  Good Clinical Practice in research, and complete all mandatory training
  • Undertake relevant professional development in negotiation with line manager and PDR discussions.
  • Act as a personal tutor for postgraduate and undergraduate students.

Research [if Education and Research contract]

  • Contribute to the academic work of the Faculty, working with colleagues and clinical teams, with the aim of obtaining significant research funding and conducting research at an international and world-leading standard according to King’s performance framework
  • Collaborate on, assist with and increasingly lead externally funded peer-reviewed collaborative research projects,  , programmes and fellowships, including winning funding by National Institute for Health and Care Research and UK Research and Innovation, industrial and commercial contribution and prestigious charities as  CO/ Principal Investigator
  • Form and grow external collaborations to enhance the quality of reach of our research programmes, linking with world leading academics and groups in related fields.
  • Supervise, co-supervise and nurture clinical and non-clinical researchers (including PhD students and fellowships) to build the field for the future.
  • ​Publish research findings in high quality peer view journals, with 1 – 2 publications that are internationally excellent or world leading each year.

If Senior Lecturer (Education & Research contract) above plus

  • Generate substantive external peer review contribution income  sufficient to support research group with 1-3 research staff and with 10% research time, steadily increasing, generated via external grants FEC

  • Minimum of 3 research publications consistent with 3*-4* REF outputs over a rolling three-year period with unique role clearly identified in acknowledgements.

Scholarship [if Academic Education contract]

  • Actively collaborate with Faculty research themes to enhance research informed education and evidence-based practice
  • ​Act as a collaborator to design innovations or projects to enhance research and integration with education

If Senior Lecturer (Academic Education) above plus:

  • Act as a coapplicant on one application for funding, which can involve working with research teams in the Faculty
  • Design, implement and review innovations or projects to enhance educational provision, plus a first author publication each year

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria (Education & Research or Academic Education Pathway)

  • Registration with the NMC, HCPC or GPhC is essential, including annotation for Independent and / or Supplementary Prescribing.
  • Experience of the planning and delivering high-quality evaluated education at undergraduate or postgraduate levels with a strong focus on student experience and success. If Senior Lecturer (SL), evidence of successfully evaluated developments and support of others to deliver high quality education.
  • Evidence of commitment to continued development in evidence-based practice, research methods and evidence relevant to care, able to supervise MSc and undergraduate projects. If SL, evidence of successful supervision to completion or PhD supervision
  • Ability to work well as an effective member of teams and networks and to share and encourage good practice in teaching and research. If SL, evidence of successful team or staff development
  • Excellent written, verbal and digital communication skills, in all formats.
  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills, underpinned by strong interpersonal skills and personal effectiveness, able to deliver high quality work and projects to deadlines. If SL, evidence of developing or managing this in others.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to promoting equality, diversity and inclusivity for staff and students.
  • The applicant will have experience of teaching prescribing courses and should possess relevant post-registration experience as a prescriber.
  • Essential criteria (Education & Research)

  • PhD or equivalent relevant to themes of the Faculty
  • Track record of peer-review publication and presentations that demonstrate international excellence or are world-leading in terms of originality, rigour, and significance in areas relevant to Faculty research themes. If Senior Lecturer (SL) should demonstrate leadership in publications and /projects, with sustainable track record consistent with world-leading or internationally excellent REF outputs.
  • Evidence of ability to secure research grant funding, demonstrated by previous experience or track record. If SL should demonstrate upward sustainable trajectory, being CI or PI on at least one substantial externally funded current grant, or with clearly defined major role within a very large programme and plans to win support for research group of 1-3 externally funded staff.

  • MSc / equivalent relevant to themes of the Faculty
  • Proven commitment to innovation and student learning in education, student welfare, and students’ personal and professional development. If SL, evidence of leadership and successful achievement in education or assessment initiatives or innovations.
