The Faculty of Arts, Law and Social Sciences is looking to recruit to a new appointment focused on artificial intelligence to drive interdisciplinary research and partnership collaboration with the Bristol Digital Futures Institute (BDFI). BDFI is committed to changing how we think about ‘digital futures’ and how we create technologies for inclusive, prosperous and sustainable societies through interdisciplinary collaboration. With investment through the Research England Research Partnership Investment fund, BDFI has bespoke leading-edge research, education and co-creation facilities that are part of Bristol’s new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.
In making this new appointment we aim to diversify the BDFI portfolio of expertise, building on previous appointments we have made. We are looking to recruit a suitable candidate with expertise in any area of artificial intelligence and its futures, including machine learning and generative AI and across the different applications where AI is put to use. We welcome applicants from Accounting and Finance, Anthropology, Economics, Education, Law, Management, Media, Philosophy, Policy Studies, Politics/International Relations and Human Geography .
The successful candidate will have a permanent ‘home’ in whichever is the most appropriate School. However for the first five years these appointments will be seconded to the BDFI and play a critical role in shaping the intellectual agenda of the Institute at an exciting time in its development.
As a BDFI Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor you will:
- Take a leadership role in the development and growth of BDFI.
- Drive a programme of internationally excellent interdisciplinary research in digital futures with a focus on artificial intelligence.
- Build interdisciplinary research capacity, within the University of Bristol and beyond.
- Lead collaborative activities with existing and new BDFI partners.
- Promote BDFI at all levels, including with funders, government and through international networks.
- You want to be part of a thriving interdisciplinary community of researchers and partners creating new knowledge and methods to proactively shape digital futures.
- You would welcome the opportunity to take a leadership role in establishing this developing research institute.
- You have a strong and growing reputation for excellence in research related to artificial intelligence.
- Have relevant experience of interdisciplinary collaboration across the social sciences and engineering/computer science and/or clear plans to grow this.
- Have experience of collaboration with government, industry and civil society.
- Have wide experience of University level teaching, administration and leadership.

We recently launched our strategy to 2030 tying together our mission, vision and values.
The University of Bristol aims to be a place where everyone feels able to be themselves and do their best in an inclusive working environment where all colleagues can thrive and reach their full potential. We want to attract, develop, and retain individuals with different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives – particularly people of colour, LGBT+ and disabled people - because diversity of people and ideas remains integral to our excellence as a global civic institution.
