The Department of Materials Science and Engineering is one of the leading UK Departments (rated top five in the REF 2014 exercise for research excellence in materials science and engineering). The Department currently has 40 academic staff including 13 Professors, 9 Readers, 6 Senior Lecturers and 9 Lecturers who receive excellent support from 17 technical and 11 secretarial staff funded from a range of sources. There are 65 postdoctoral research staff, 141 research students, and 224 students taking taught MEng and BEng degree programmes.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Senior Engineering Technician (Ceramics and Functional Materials) in the Technical Team based in the Sir Robert Hadfield Building.
Reporting to the Technical Engineering Team Leader (Laboratories), the post holder will proactively support students and staff in the field of ceramics and functional materials. You should have an understanding of chemical laboratory operations, experience of working in a science or engineering environment and practical experience of maintenance and operation of basic to high-end scientific equipment and techniques, for example furnaces, thermal analysis instrumentation, mechanical sample preparation, furnaces and gloveboxes.
You will carry out repairs and modifications to custom and common user research equipment, designing novel solutions to research problems, advising on systems usage and maintenance, and assisting in system installation and commissioning where required.
The successful candidate will advise on safe working practice within departmental laboratories and ensure appropriate records are available and maintained, therefore knowledge of safe use and storage of chemicals would be required.
You will also play a part in the development of Health and Safety culture and policy by liaison with the Departmental Technical Manager, Safety Officer and University service providers. If you feel that this post fits your skills and experience, we would like to hear from you!
