About the team/job

EMBL-EBI is a world-leader in archiving and disseminating 3D biomacromolecular and cellular structure data. The EMDB and EMPIAR teams play a key role in the dissemination of 3DEM data through the open-access public archiving. The EMDB and EMPIAR are situated at EMBL-EBI, Hinxton, UK alongside many other scientific services including the BioImage Archive, PDBe, PDB-KB and UniProt. The EMDB is a member of the Worldwide Protein Data Bank organisation (wwPDB), which closely aligns the EMDB with other wwPDB partners PDBe, RCSB PDB, PDBj and BMRB, who coordinate a worldwide effort in structural biology archiving of 3DEM volumes and associated macromolecular models. EMPIAR is the central archive for raw 3DEM data including from single particle analysis, tomography and volume EM.

The EMDB and EMPIAR develop and provide advanced tools and web-resources for searching, analysing and visualising structural data for the benefit of structural biologists, the wider scientific and M.L. communities. The teams consist of a diverse mix of international and inter-disciplinary professionals including domain experts, software developers, IT specialists and project coordinators.

Your role

High-quality curation of new depositions to the EMDB and EMPIAR archives is essential for these services to remain the authoritative global sources of biomacromolecular structure information. You will apply your domain expertise in cryogenic sample electron microscopy (cryoEM) and cryogenic sample electron tomography (cryoET) to curate depositions to the EMDB and EMPIAR. You will have the opportunity to also work on the curation of volume EM data. In the curation of EMDB entries you will also work closely with the neighbouring PDBe biocurator team.

As Scientific Database Curator, you will have an important role to play in the evaluation of best practices identified in incoming data and information structures, to feed this understanding back into the archiving process. The work will then also involve analyses and future development of EMDB/EMPIAR technologies, services and their integration with other bioinformatics resources. Database curators also participate in developing training material, delivery of workshops and in community activities. You will therefore help with user-experience (UX) testing, outreach and training.

We are looking for individuals with a PhD degree in a structural biology related and at least two years' experience in cryoEM/cryoET or a related discipline. Previous experience of structural deposition, bio-curation, UX testing, scripting/development, outreach and training would be beneficial, as would the demonstrated ability to take initiative, learn quickly and adapt to new challenges.

The position may require occasional travel.

You have
  • PhD degree in a structural biology related field (e.g., 3DEM, X-ray crystallography, NMR and 3DEM);
  • Hands-on experience in the determination of protein structure;
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of macromolecular structure, and ideally a broad knowledge in molecular biology or biochemistry;
  • Ability to work both independently and in close collaboration with multiple teams;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the English language;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Excellent Attention to detail.

You might also have
  • Post-doctoral research experience in structural biology;
  • Experience with coordinated outreach activities that feedback to organisational change;
  • Experience with computer scripting or Python programming would be an advantage;
  • Experience of social media outreach.
