Europe's top cancer charity, Cancer Research UK, has combined with the University of Cambridge to fund the world class Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, situated on Addenbrooke's Biomedical Campus in Cambridge.
As part of the University Of Cambridge School Of Clinical Medicine, the Institute's research ranges from basic cancer biology through translational cancer research to clinical application. The Institute currently houses over 400 researchers and support staff with over 20 research groups and associated core facilities in a state-of-the-art research facility.
The Cambridge Institute Proteomics Facility (CIPF) provides research groups across Cambridge access to proteomic expertise and infrastructure for in-depth protein analysis (identification and quantification) of complex samples employing a wide range of proteomic methods.
We are recruiting a skilled, experienced scientist to join our team in providing excellent proteomic support to research groups within the institute. Together with other team members the successful candidate will be responsible for
- The calibration, maintenance and operation of the latest Thermo Scientific Orbitrap instruments (QExactive HF, Fusion Lumos Orbitrap and Orbitrap Ascend mass spectrometers) and associated nanoLC systems.
- All aspects of sample preparation for MS analysis
- Processing and analysis of datasets
- Communication of the results to facility manager and users.
- Data management
As a Scientific Associate, you will have the opportunity to work under your own initiative and apply your excellent problem-solving skills to troubleshoot challenging technical issues. You will be continually exposed to a diversity of new protocols and techniques and the latest in cutting edge mass spectrometry technology. You will be able to interact and advise our users and apply your expertise, both within the team and within the institute. In addition, you will support technical development projects that benefit the CIPF and Institute.
Applicants will ideally have a degree in analytical chemistry/biochemistry or one of the life sciences and practical experience of working in a proteomics or protein chemistry laboratory either in an academic or industrial setting. Ideally you will have experience in the running and maintenance of Orbitrap mass spectrometers or similar high end MS instrumentation as well as experience in the analysis of proteomic data using software such as Proteome Discover and MaxQuant.
Desirable experience in methods for quantification would be a distinct advantage as would candidates with familiarity/expertise in R, python or similar languages. You will be highly organised, computer-literate with excellent reporting and communication skills. You will have a flexible and cooperative approach to working and be able to demonstrate broad practical proteomics and biology skills.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 18 months in the first instance.
