The Post

Following the growing success of our Learning and Development activities for widening access and widening participation, supported by Scotland’s Community of Access and Participation Practitioners (SCAPP), we have an exciting opportunity for a Learning and Development Coordinator. The post will be hosted by the University of Stirling.

This position will be fixed term until July 2025 in the first instance, but may continue subject to ongoing funding.

The Learning and Development role supports the SFC investment already made in Scotland's Framework for Fair Access and builds the capacity required, alongside other measures, to further develop the professionalisation of the widening access and participation practitioner community.

In your role of Learning and Development Coordinator within SCAPP you will continue to take forward and grow the development of professional development and learning opportunities for the widening access and widening participation professional community.

You will report to the SCAPP Development Manager and work closely with the Learning and Development Working Group to further develop and shape a range of learning, development, training and CPD opportunities and events for the widening access and widening participation practitioner community.

You will bring experience of negotiating, developing and delivering targeted activities which cater for the interests and needs of the widening access and widening participation community. You will bring enthusiasm, creativity and have excellent organisational and communication skills, and with a flexible and proactive approach to your work. You will have demonstrable experience of partnership building with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work autonomously.

The post is hosted at the University of Stirling and you will benefit from the flexibility of their Agile Working Framework, which enables you to operate a hybrid approach to working.


Description of Duties

  • Develop and enhance practice by identifying, creating, negotiating, organising and delivering activities, events, training and learning programmes which are relevant for the widening access and widening participation community
  • Further development and management of the successful SCAPP Mentoring Programme (MAPS) and the SCAPP New Practitioner Network
  • Management, support and ongoing implementation and development of the Widening Access and Widening Participation Professional Standards Framework and Accreditation Scheme
  • Work with a consideration of sustainable costing models for charging of learning which is attractive and affordable for SCAPP members
  • Negotiation and development of activities, learning resources, events and training to build capacity and confidence to support evaluation of widening access and participation activities, this could include supporting an Evaluation Community of Practice
  • Support online content in relation to the development of learning opportunities
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships and partnerships with colleagues across the sector, relevant government bodies, education partners, colleges, universities and other organisations involved in promoting widening access and participation
  • Represent SCAPP at relevant meetings, conferences and other events as appropriate
  • Willingness to undertake all administrative and operational tasks required by SCAPP (such as managing mailing lists, newsletters, website content) independently and in collaboration with the SCAPP Development Manager
  • Manage relevant budgets for activities
  • Writing of relevant reports related to role and activities delivered
  • Undertake such other reasonable projects and duties as may be required by the SCAPP Development Manager and by the Steering Group


Essential Criteria

  • Educated or skills and experience at SCQF 9 degree level or equivalent
  • Current and demonstrable knowledge of the Scottish Widening Access and Widening Participation landscape, policy drivers, and underrepresented groups in tertiary education
  • Experience of developing, negotiating and delivering professional learning experiences for a variety of different learners within the professional widening access and participation community
  • Proven experience of working independently and proactively to undertake complex issues and complete tasks and projects
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strong and productive effective networks and partnerships, and delivering projects in a multi-partner environment
  • Experience of organising and managing events
  • Excellent organisational and written communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to present material and information to a variety of different audiences
  • Proven ability to think strategically, to prioritise effectively and to balance a demanding and varied work-load
  • Confident with IT and digital platforms and software
  • Willing to adopt a flexible approach to work and to travel as and when required


Desirable Criteria

  • Relevant post-graduate qualification or equivalent
  • Qualification and/or experience in teaching, facilitation, coaching, mentoring
  • Understanding of evaluation processes in tertiary education

    SCAPP aims to be a sustainable, member-led community. The membership has grown (from 86 in January 2020 to currently almost 600 and includes representation from universities, colleges, National Schools Programme, skills, voluntary, charity and public sector organisations and aims to continue to build the network to represent the diversity of interests, activities and work in which practitioners are engaged.

    SCAPP supports a number of objectives – Networking and Events, Professional Learning and Development, Evaluation and Research and Quality Standards – and is governed by a Steering Group with representation from across the university, college, National Schools Programme, school and charity sector to offer balance in terms of experience, sector representation, geographic representation and gender balance.
