Job Purpose

The postholder will work as part of the multi-university MDMC team (MDMC, https://mdmc.hw.ac.uk/) which offers manufacturing, engineering, regulatory and business development expertise to advance the ideation, design, development, manufacturing and documentation of medical devices in companies with technical activity in Scotland.

The role will include gaining understanding of the needs of companies in Medical Device Manufacturing; advising and assisting them with access to the two Facilities at the University of Glasgow; estimating required equipment use for work to be done; operating equipment to complete the tasks at hand; and working seamlessly in a team with Technical Specialists and other staff at the partner universities, under the leadership of Heriot Watt University.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Liaise with companies, with support from academics and the broader MDMC team, to understand the companies’ technical needs in working with MDMC and take a leading role in the planning and conduct of development projects individually or jointly in accordance with these identified outcomes in the development process.

2. Provide advice and assistance to the companies to access relevant equipment in the Microscale and Meso-scale Packaging Facility and the Precision Material Testing Facility at the University of Glasgow.

3. Provide estimates of required use of the equipment for work to be done and operate or supervise operation of the equipment to complete the tasks at hand.

4. Work seamlessly in a team with Technical Specialists and other staff at partner universities to ensure company needs are met by the MDMC as an integrated centre.

5. Work with School staff (academics, researchers and technicians) as necessary to establish and maintain the Facility infrastructure to support high demand throughput for MDMC, as one of multiple users.

6. Assist in analysis of operational data on equipment as well as monitoring delivery of targets, and providing regular reports to inform strategic direction, resource allocation and financial decision-making.

7. Represent MDMC where necessary and contribute to on-going marketing to visitors to the Facilities.

8. Take the lead as appropriate in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.

9. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.

10. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan: World Changers Together.

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential:

A1 A PhD in a relevant discipline or professionally qualified / technically trained in an academic or industrial engineering environment to the equivalent standard.

A2 Specialist theoretical and demonstrable practical knowledge of the use of equipment in the relevant Facilities.

A3 Knowledge of current issues and future directions within both the specific area of medical device manufacturing and the wider area of medical devices.

A4 Knowledge of specialist IT software as appropriate.

A5 Knowledge of technical models, equipment and metrological techniques as they apply to medical device manufacturing.

Skills

Essential:

C1 Demonstrable skill in utilizing equipment in the Facilities, either hands-on or by staff supervision.

C2 Demonstrable and proven day-to-day project management skills, including evidence of contributions to delivery of more than one project simultaneously.

C3 Demonstrable track record in proactive planning, organisation, prioritizing and delivery of work for multiple simultaneous technical projects.

C4 Demonstrable capacity to think strategically whilst enhancing operational priorities.

C5 Proven track record in effective team working in an industrial and/or academic setting.

C6 Proven people liaison skills including managing and motivating less senior staff, working in teams and developing team members’ skills and knowledge.

Experience

Essential:

E1 Sufficient relevant experience in the area of medical devices, normally including experience at a postdoctoral equivalent level in a related field.

E2 Significant experience of working in and with high technology organisations on multi-disciplined and high value projects.

E3 Experience of scoping and defining ‘fit for purpose’ facility requirements, project work practices and systems.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 7, £39,347 - £44,263 per annum.

This post is full time, and has funding for up to 24 months
