Research Project Officer - Smart Internet Lab

We are seeking a talented Project Officer to manage our portfolio of cutting-edge research projects within the prestigious Smart Internet Lab at the University of Bristol. As a key member of our team, you will play a vital role in driving forward groundbreaking initiatives that shape the future of technology.

The Smart Internet Lab is one of the UK's most renowned Information and Communications Technology (ICT) research centres. It fuses research expertise and innovation in a range of research areas such as: 5G and Beyond 5G, Networking, Optical Networks, Quantum Networking, Data Centre and Cloud Computing, Software and Hardware Defined Networking, and AI assisted Networking.

This role is open-ended with fixed funding until July 2025, with potential for extension beyond that timeframe.

  • Providing effective management of all financial, administrative and contractual issues relating to a portfolio of research projects.
  • Financial Management: Taking charge of overseeing all financial aspects, ensuring efficient management of budgets across a diverse portfolio of research projects.
  • Strategic Planning: Strategically planning and organising your workload and others’, ensuring alignment with project objectives and compliance with funder requirements.
  • Relationship Building: Cultivating and maintaining strong relationships within the Smart Internet Lab and with project partners, fostering collaboration and ensuring effective project delivery.
  • Communications and Dissemination: designing and maintaining the project communications channels (SharePoint, Websites, Social Media); and gathering information about research outputs as required.
  • Team work: contributing to the wider Smart Internet Lab Professional Services Team, supporting the team in the development and implementation of good practices in research management. 
  • You have proven project management skills, particularly in a research environment, with a knack for financial oversight and reporting.
  • You are proactive, confident, and impeccably organised—ready to take initiative and thrive as part of a collaborative team.
  • You have stellar communication and interpersonal abilities to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • You have a talent for fostering productive relationships with colleagues spanning all levels of seniority.
  • You are willing to travel to attend project meetings or events.
