Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 year in the first instance.
Applications are invited for a highly motivated research assistant to work on meiotic recombination control in model and crop plants in Dr Natasha Yelina's laboratory, starting as soon as possible. The successful candidate will be joining a vibrant and friendly group of researchers in the Crop Science Centre at the University of Cambridge.
The Crop Science Centre which opened in October 2020 benefits from the diverse skills and expertise of the University of Cambridge and NIAB, providing an environment for research excellence in crops, with the drive and expertise for scientific translation to address real-world problems.
Meiotic recombination, or crossovers, create genetic variation which is the basis of selective breeding. Despite their importance for crop breeding, crossovers are limiting due to their low numbers and uneven distribution along chromosomes. Using Arabidopsis as a model, the project will dissect mechanistic control of crossover formation with the aim to develop strategies to overcome crossover limitations in crop breeding.
Successful candidates will have a strong background in molecular cloning, plant genetics and plant molecular biology, a strong interest in the fundamental mechanisms of meiotic recombination and their future application to crop breeding. Experience with DNA, RNA work and plant growth and maintenance are essential. Information on the laboratory is available at website https://www.cropsciencecentre.org/research/crop-breeding-technologies/ .
Informal enquiries are welcomed and should be directed to Natasha Yelina, [email protected] .
