Research represents the lifeblood of the University of Southampton. It powers everything we do, from our innovative teaching to our growing portfolio of spin-out companies, enabling the development of products and services for the benefit of individuals, businesses and the wider economy.

Research and Innovation Services (RIS) provides expert advice and assistance, working alongside the researchers through the entire research journey. The ‘Research Integrity and Compliance Office (RICO) in RIS, is a dedicated and friendly team, focusing support to researchers on a variety of compliance and regulatory requirements, including export control and UK national security. RICO’s other important remit is to promote and embed an excellent culture of research integrity in all of research activities across the University.

In this role:

  • You will be working as a team member to ensure that the University’s research is complaint with UK legislation such as Export Control Act 2020, National Security Investment Act 2021, Nagoya Protocol and Human Tissue Act 2004;
  • You will help foster and manage relationships with academic staff to provide advice and guidance on compliance matters required in their research; this will also involve creating and providing training.
  • Part of your role will be to engage with governmental stakeholders such as the Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU) and the Investment Security Unit (ISU) to ensure compliance;
  • Your role will also provide ongoing advice and support to researchers in relation to the Nagoya Protocol to allow researchers to access global genetic resources;
  • As part of the RICO team, you will also assist in overseeing integrity cases under the University’s ‘Procedure for Investigating Cases of Alleged Misconduct in Research’ and support the University’s commitment to fulfilling the principles of the Concordat to Support Research Integrity (October 2019).
  • You will be expected to have strong organisational and inter-personal skills to succeed in working in large, collaborative teams across RIS and the wider university.

If you have a relevant degree or a similar professional qualification with a keen interest, or experience in compliance, regulatory activities, integrity or governance, then we would like to hear from you.

Our vision and mission at the University of Southampton is to have a community where staff and students feel welcome, supported and valued. RIS fosters a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity, encouraging applicants from diverse backgrounds, with the belief that excellence will be achieved through recognising the value of every individual. Our flexible working practices, including an emerging hybrid working model, where employees can split their working time between the office and home, support our belief that this balance brings long-lasting benefits for our institution as well as our people. For this role, candidates will need to be on campus regularly and to be available to attend meetings and events externally as required.
