Antarctic krill are central to Antarctic marine ecosystems, but subject to a fishery managed with insufficient spatiotemporal resolution or species representation. There is an urgent need to elucidate the spatiotemporal characteristics of interactions among krill, baleen whales and the krill fishery and to develop our capacity to forecast these interactions. The Darwin Plus project ‘Safeguarding Antarctic Krill Stocks For Baleen Whales’ (https://www.bas.ac.uk/project/safeguarding-antarctic-krill-stocks-for-baleen-whales/ ) aims to provide this information by collecting and analysing fine-scale data on krill and whale distribution, to improve krill fishery management and conserve krill-based Antarctic marine ecosystems.

We are seeking to recruit a postdoctoral research assistant to undertake research in accordance with this project under the supervision of Dr Ryan Reisinger at the School of Ocean and Earth Science, University of Southampton. The project outcome is provision to CCAMLR of Working Papers, data and information to help ensure krill fishery management occurs at ecologically relevant spatial and temporal scales.

The postdoctoral research assistant will be responsible for data analysis and modelling of fisheries and whale biologging data, and communication (preparation of data products and peer-reviewed and information papers) of results. They will also assist with fieldwork preparation and may conduct fieldwork in the Western Antarctic Peninsula region in year 2 of the project.

You should have:

  • A PhD or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Ecology, Oceanography or a related area.
  • A detailed understanding and knowledge of animal movement, biologging and predictive modelling.
  • Experience of analysing animal biologging and/or fisheries data in R and/or Python.

For additional information or informal enquiries before submitting your application, contact Dr Ryan Reisinger: [email protected]

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
