Job Purpose

To make a leading contribution to the project Mechanobiology in physiologic and pathologic microenvironments working with Professor Manuel Salmeron-Sanchez. The successful candidate will be required to make a leading contribution to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as make a significant contribution to the management and direction of this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Play a leading role in the management and development of the project and to work independently and in collaboration to bring the project to a successful completion including establishing and maintaining external collaborations both nationally and internationally.

2. Take a leading role in the development of the research agenda and in the planning, execution and future direction of the research project in line with College and University Research Strategy

3. Establish and maintain an extensive research profile and reputation and that of the University of Glasgow/ School/ Research Group and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.

4. Play a leading role in the presentation of research findings at high profile national and international conferences, seminars and meetings to enhance the research profile of the project/Institute/College/University.

5. Lead the development, both independently and in collaboration with others (including stakeholders) of the identification of potential funding sources and lead in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research of international quality.

6. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the project and in the broader Institute/College/University and wider community (e.g. academic and other collaborators/partners).

7. Play a leading role in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.

8. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.

9. Supervise Masters students and PhD students as assigned by Professor Manuel Salmeron-Sanchez.

10. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the project and Institute, including budgets/expenditure.

11. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline in order to provide advice and guidance to students and less experienced colleagues.

12. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.

13. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School.

14. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together

Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential:

A1. Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework level 12 (PhD) or equivalent in a relevant subject area.

A2. A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions within the wider subject area or subject specialism. Excellent understanding of cell biology at the interface with synthetic materials.

A3. Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge in areas relevant to the field of research.

Skills

Essential:

C1. Excellent working knowledge of molecular and cell biology techniques at the interface with biomaterials, including qPCR, western-blot, optical and fluorescence microscopy.

C2 Ability, drive and organisational skills to secure research grant funding, lead a research team and develop an international research profile

C3 Research creativity and a strong cross-disciplinary collaborative ability

C4 Excellent Team Leadership skills including demonstrable supervisory skills

C5 Appropriate workload / time / project / budget / people management skills

C6 Excellent interpersonal skills including team working and a collegial approach

C7 Excellent communication skills (oral and written) in appropriate range of contexts, and the ability to present and communicate complex material clearly

C10 Ability and willingness to take on appropriate administrative duties within the School

Experience

Essential:

E1 Substantial relevant postdoctoral experience in a related field

E2. Significant experience in scientific writing and a strong track record of publication of research results in top quality international journals and conferences

E3. Experience of delivering quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.
E4. An established national/international profile.

E5. Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities.
E6. Experience of independence as illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of literature, design and analysis of research data and drafting of papers.

E7. Commitment to open research, as appropriate to the discipline, through open data, open code, open educational resources and practices that support replication.
E8. Proven commitment to supporting career development of colleagues and to other forms of collegiality appropriate to the career stage.

E9 Proven experience of planning and directing a research project, and delivering high-quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 8, £48,350 - £56,021 per annum.

This post is full time and fixed term for up to 2 years.
