Developing a model for the neutralization process in electron beam additive manufacturing machines – modelling dusty plasmas.

We are searching for a dynamic and self-motivated researcher to develop a a computational model for the NeuBeam charge neutralisation process.

This research post is part of a substantial £1M multi-institutional research grant funded by an Innovate UK Smart grant, with a primary aim of implementing enhanced 2-D in-process monitoring by integrating Back Scattered electron Detection (BSD) into Wayland's NeuBeam AM process -- enabling true real-time imaging of melt pool dynamics potentially including geometrical form, melt pool temperature, melt pool cooling dynamics, and material composition of the melt pool.

Successful candidates will be based in the EPE Research Centre of the electronics and computer science department (http://www.orc.soton.ac.uk), but will collaborate very closely with Wayland Additive, who will provide the experimental data to compare and validate the computational code for charge neutralisation of the powder bed.

Qualifications for potential candidates include a robust background in electrical or electronic engineering, physics or mathematics coupled with expertise in the numerical simulation of plasmas. An ability for critical evaluation and interpretation of experimental data is crucial. Preference will be given to applicants with hands-on experience of using the SPIS code developed for space applications including charging of lunar dust.

Applicants are expected to demonstrate:

  • Strong research capabilities complemented by effective teamwork skills.
  • Willingness and ability to contribute to the supervision of postgraduate students.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, along with a proven track record in journal publications and conference presentations.

Join us in this exciting venture, where your expertise will contribute to advancing the field of additive manufacturing.

These positions are full-time, fixed term up to 2 years duration.

For informal enquiries of the position, please contact Prof  Steve Gabriel(email: [email protected] ).

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
