We are seeking dynamic, self-starters to join our team with a focus on building our capabilities in Clean Maritime Innovation. You will join our Department, which is one quarter of the School of Engineering and is one of the strongest and largest within the UK, as well as being part of community of 400+ academics in the Southampton Marine & Maritime Institute, which comprises colleagues with expertise across a wide range of maritime engineering and associated disciplines. 

The Research Fellow will develop proposals for external funding in the area of clean and zero carbon maritime systems, and related topics. This will include working directly with industrial, government and funding stakeholders with a view to establishing large scale facilities for demonstrating and accelerating the adoption of novel and game-changing clean maritime technologies. You must be able to work both on your own initiative and as part of a wider team, be able to manage complex projects where the challenges are not clearly defined and seek collaborative consensus towards common project outcomes.

To make the most of this exciting role, you will need a PhD* (or equivalent professional qualifications and experience) in a relevant area of maritime engineering along with a track-record of published research. You’ll have a proven ability to develop innovative research proposals and attract research funding.  Highly organised, with strong communication skills, you’ll be ready to manage and motivate others.

*Applications will be considered from candidates who are working towards completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon completion of PhD.   Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

This post is a fixed term of 24 months with a possibility to extend the position beyond the end of the current contract duration.
