The Retinal Cell Biology Lab at the University of Southampton seeks to recruit a capable and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher for a 3 year project at the intersection of basic and translational research. The successful candidate will join the multidisciplinary Faculty of Medicine’s Vision Group, composed of both basic scientists and clinicians, providing a rich environment for exciting professional and personal development.

Taking advantage of human ESC derived retinal organoid cultures the post holder will work on a collaborative project seeking to understand photoreceptor physiology.

Candidates should have a PhD (or about to be awarded) in a relevant life sciences area and a BSc/MSc in a related subject (e.g. developmental cell biology/genetics). Knowledge of mammalian cellular and developmental biology is essential. The candidate will have robust skills in molecular biology techniques as well as robust experience in pluripotent stem cell culture, organoid differentiation, histology, flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. Experience with using the programming language R is desirable. The candidate must have excellent organisational, communication and problem solving skills.

A successful track-record in research, as evidenced by having published at least one primary research article in the past five years in a peer-reviewed journal, is required.

Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification if the above requirements are met. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title Senior Research Assistant will be given.
