The Surrey Space Centre at the University of Surrey is seeking to recruit a full-time researcher in Space Engineering.

The analysis of Air-Breathing Electric Propulsion spacecraft is subject of ongoing research within SSC. The successful candidate will be conducting an analysis of this novel spacecraft platform, investigating its key subsystems.

Duration

This is a fixed term contract for up to 10 months, to start in April 2024.

Main Responsibilities/Activities

The successful candidate will work on: analysis of the key subsystems of an Air-Breathing Electric Propulsion spacecraft; orbital simulations; aerodynamic analysis based on the atmospheric environment at the target altitudes; writing of technical reports, conference, or journal articles; presentations during project progress meetings.

The post holder must have

We are looking for applicants who hold, or are near completion of, a PhD in a space engineering discipline.  Consideration may also be given to individuals who do not hold a PhD but have a degree in relevant disciplines and demonstrate the required skills. The candidate should have general understanding of the fundamentals of orbital mechanics, orbital simulations, aerodynamics in rarefied environments and general knowledge of the key subsystems of a spacecraft and their sizing.

Please note, it is University Policy to offer a starting salary equivalent to Level 3.6 (£34,980) to successful applicants who have been awarded, but are yet to receive, their PhD certificate.  Once the original PhD certificate has been submitted to the local HR Department, the salary will be increased to Level 4.1 (£36,024).
