2579424DAYou will join us to work on a project named WBV-ACUTE which is part of the DASA initiative on understanding whole-body vibration to predict and prevent future injury induced by exposure to WBV. WBV-ACUTE is a partnership between the School of Engineering, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Department of Electronics and Computer Science at the University of Southampton. The post will be based at the University of Southampton, UK.
WBV-ACUTE will conduct a set of controlled trials on a variety of instrumented vehicles and personnel, fitted with novel wearable clothing embedded sensor technology, serves to determine the relationship between the vibration environment and personnel exposure more accurately. This data establishes the transmission of ambient vehicle vibration to critical body areas, and quantifies short term shocks and transient inputs. The trials data is processed, beyond that in existing standards, to provide equivalent fatigue and dosage quantification. During the field trials work, pre and post exposure physiological assessments are conducted. In parallel, the vibration environment is reproduced for a larger scale subjective testing on the university six axis shaker where more in-depth short term effects using physical and physiological measures are quantified as a function of vehicle environment, duration and amplitude. Novel indication measures for WBV effects on performance degradation are derived and risk reduction via mitigation measures including posture modifications, revised work/rest schedules and optimised rest periods for recovery from motion-induced fatigue are determined.
You will be working with Dr Ying Ye and Professor Neil Ferguson (ISVR) and collaborator Professor Markus Heller (Mech Eng). You need to have a PhD in Acoustics, Sound and Vibration Engineering, Human Factor, or a related discipline. Experience in designing and conducting acoustic or vibration measurements and conducting human experimental studies in the field or lab is an advantage. You will have strong skills in MATLAB or Python for noise and vibration analysis and be comfortable working with statistical methods to quantify characteristics of data sets. In addition to undertaking original, state of the art research you will write and submit academic papers, prepare project deliverables, and travel to academic conferences and project meetings to present your work and represent the team.
As a university we aim to create an environment where everyone can thrive, and we are proactive in fostering a culture of inclusion, respect and equality of opportunity. We believe that we can only truly meet our objectives if we are reflective of society, so we are passionate about creating a working environment in which you are free to bring your whole self to work. With a generous holiday allowance as well as additional university closure days we are committed to supporting our staff and students and open to a flexible working approach.
Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion and welcome applicants who support our mission of inclusivity.
