Research Fellow In Colour Technology

School of Design, Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?  Do you have a research background in colour science?  Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities?

The University of Leeds is one of the top 75 universities in the world. We have a truly global community, with more than 39,000 students from 170 different countries and over 9,000 staff of 100 different nationalities. Established in 1904, we have a strong tradition of academic excellence, reflected in first-class student education, along with world-leading research that has a real impact around the globe.

The successful applicant will join the Colour Technology Research Group, the School of Design, a world leading research centre with a focus in creativity and developing innovative materials and manufacturing solutions with interdisciplinary researchers and industrial partners. You will join an experienced, innovative and diverse team and will be actively involved in research, producing high quality publications and contributing to the School’s Research Excellence Framework (REF).

Working in collaboration with the academic team and our industry partner, you will develop a new colour space based on the cone response for specifying the skin colour and evaluating the skin colour difference. The optical properties of human skin have been the subject of numerous investigations. Research suggested that color vision evolved for the purpose of seeing skin color modulations signaling emotion or mood. The skin colour depends on the content of the melanin and haemoglobin in the skin. The research will further investigate the relationship between the cone responses and the variation of haemoglobin content, and develop uniform colour space for specifying skin colour and evaluating skin colour differences in terms of cone responses. The project is led by the Colour Technology Research Group in the School of Design.

You will have a PhD in applied mathematics or colour imaging science. You will also have a developing record of research (commensurate with the level of the post) and will provide a clear indication of the ability to achieve internationally recognised standards of excellence.
