About the role

In this role you will work with School of Physics and Astronomy colleagues within the Planetary Science and at Space Park Leicester, on the Elfen CubeSat mission concept. Elfen has two science goals, firstly to understand the solar wind heavy ion influence on the magnetosphere, and secondly, to under processes that control the nightside plasma sheet. Elfen is a mission concept under study by the engineering team at Space Park Leicester. This post is to fully profile the science subsystem definition of the mission, and support the engineering study.Funding for this position is being sought, and this post is wholly dependent on that funding being secured. A contract for employment will only be issued if the bid is successful.
You will work collaboratively and independently as part of the research team to achieve defined milestones, and produce high quality research as part of your role.


About you
With a PhD (or close to completion), in a research area relevant to space plasma physics or planetary science. You will be able to evidence research experience and skills in a relevant subject, alongside knowledge of Solar-Terrestrial physics at an international research level.
We are looking for someone with strong programming skills, ideally in Python. You will show a record of productive research and can demonstrate the ability to produce published research papers. Knowledge of other scientific computing languages such as IDL, and FORTRAN is an asset.
