Research Associate / Senior Research Associate - ONEheart – Low Order Stall Modelling for HARW Wings
We are seeking a motivated interdisciplinary researcher to join the University of Bristol, as part of the Aerospace Technology Institute / IUK funded ONEheart project. The work involves the development of the improved low-order aerodynamics model to simulate time dependent separated flows to be coupled with nonlinear beam models. The models will be validated against high-fidelity 3D simulations developed elsewhere.
As part of the role it would be expected that the candidate works closely with all university and industrial partners in the ONEheart project, making regular presentations, writing progress reports and completing project deliverables.
The successful candidate will be part of a team of researchers working on different aspects of the project.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Development of low order aerodynamic models considering time dependent separated flows coupled to nonlinear beam models
- Bifurcation analysis of the simple aeroelastic model to predict nonlinear responses including limit cycle oscillations
- Comparison of modelling approach with high fidelity CFD results
- Produce written technical reports to meet the required deliverables of ONEheart and also publish conference and journal papers arising from this work as appropriate.
- You have knowledge of aeroelasticity and nonlinear dynamics
- You have a 1st class undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering or related engineering domain
- Candidates for the I Grade position should have or be working towards a PhD in Aerospace Engineering or a related engineering domain
- Candidates for the J Grade position should already possess a PhD in Aerospace Engineering or a closely related engineering domain and in addition should have good previous PDRA experience.
Experience in the development of low order aerodynamic models or numerical continuation would be particularly advantageous.
Please see the attached Job Description for more details.
For informal queries please contact Dorian Jones, [email protected], or Mark Lowenberg, [email protected].
To find out more about what it's like to work in the Faculty of Engineering, and how the Faculty supports people to achieve their potential, please see our staff blog:

Interviews are anticipated to be held on 19th April 2024.
We recently launched our strategy to 2030 tying together our mission, vision and values.
The University of Bristol aims to be a place where everyone feels able to be themselves and do their best in an inclusive working environment where all colleagues can thrive and reach their full potential. We want to attract, develop, and retain individuals with different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives – particularly people of colour, LGBT+ and disabled people - because diversity of people and ideas remains integral to our excellence as a global civic institution.
