Can you re-imagine the laser? Are you ready to be part of a groundbreaking project that will use quantum-inspired technology to reshape the world of lasers and semiconductor technology?
We are seeking an enthusiastic self-starter to join our team in the Quantum Engineering Technology Laboratories (QET Labs ) at the University of Bristol. Our exciting EPSRC funded project will take laser technology to the next level with the introduction of Tamm Assisted Metasurface Surface Emitting Lasers (TAMSELs). TAMSELs are the future of semiconductor manufacturing, offering unprecedented advantages over traditional semiconductor laser designs. A quantum-inspired technology, they promise to increase manufacturing throughput by 50%, offer post-growth control of laser properties, and unlock the potential for faster modulation and reduced power consumption. TAMSELs have the potential to completely disrupt the sensing and datacentre communications markets.
You’ll be joining a team of photonics experts, led by Dr Edmund Harbord , working on this project in the area of semiconductor quantum and quantum-inspired technologies.
QET Labs is a Research Centre of over 100 academics, researchers, staff and students that encompasses a cluster of quantum-related activities spanning research, training and enterprise. Working together, we aim to transform science into real concept demonstrators and entrepreneurial innovation for the commercial success of quantum technologies. You will be part of a dynamic team and have the opportunity to interact with all members of QET Labs and the wider Bristol Quantum Information Institute .
This position is well-suited for individuals with experience as a photonics engineer or some experience working in an optics lab.
- You’ll lead the development of TAMSEL lasers
- You’ll work in our extensive suite of quantum photonics laboratories, including with colleagues in our Cleanroom, as well as in collaboration with the National Epitaxy Facility in Sheffield and the Compound Semiconductor Applications Catapult in Cardiff.
- You’ll have the opportunity to develop skills in metasurface design and fabrication as well as semiconductor lasers.
- You’ll be writing papers and presenting at conferences, as well engaging directly with industrial collaborators.
- You aspire to engage in impactful work and contribute to world-class scientific advancements that have the potential to revolutionise a billion-dollar industry.
For the Research Associate position:
- A good honours degree (or equivalent) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Physics.
- Some relevant research experience in photonics.
- A relevant postgraduate research degree or equivalent professional qualification/experience may be preferred, but candidates who are currently pursuing such qualifications are also encouraged to apply.
For the Senior Research Associate position:
- A relevant postgraduate research degree or equivalent professional experience in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Physics.
- Demonstrated research and laboratory experience in photonics.
For informal queries please contact Dr Edmund Harbord, [email protected] .
Interviews are anticipated to be held on 15 May 2024.
We recently launched our strategy to 2030 tying together our mission, vision and values.
The University of Bristol aims to be a place where everyone feels able to be themselves and do their best in an inclusive working environment where all colleagues can thrive and reach their full potential. We want to attract, develop, and retain individuals with different experiences, backgrounds and perspectives – particularly people of colour, LGBT+ and disabled people - because diversity of people and ideas remains integral to our excellence as a global civic institution.
