At the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, Department Geosciences, Institute of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, the Junior Professorship in Environmental Remote Sensing offers a position as

Research Associate / PhD Student / Postdoc (m/f/x)

(subject to personal qualification employees are remunerated according to salary group E 13 TV-L)

starting April 1.2024 and limited for 36 months.The period of employment is governed by the Fixed Term Research Contracts Act (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz - WissZeitVG). The position comprises 50% of the fulltime weekly hours The position aims at obtaining further academic qualification (usually PhD / habilitation thesis). There is the option to raise the working time with third-party funding.

Tasks: teaching activities, including independent teaching of lectures, exercises or seminars in the Faculty's Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes. Scientific research on radar remote sensing for the retrieval and mapping of land surface properties such as vegetation moisture and fuel loads and their application for forest fire risk assessment. Activities include the acquisition, processing and analysis of remote sensing data; the maintenance and data analysis of measuring stations; the implementation, training, evaluation and analysis of machine learning methods or physical radiative transfer models; and the writing of scientific publications and presentation of results to stakeholders in administration, nature conservation and disaster management as well as at international conferences and workshops.

Requirements: university degree and if applicable PhD with a focus on remote sensing and environmental sciences; expert knowledge in analyzing remote sensing or climate data in Python and/or R as well as practical experience in machine learning and radiative transfer models; knowledge of Linux/Unix and HPC systems; willingness to work in the field; drivers license class B; interest in questions of global environmental change, especially in the research topics of the junior professorship; strong teamwork and communication skills; goal-oriented working style; business fluent in written and oral English.
