Research Associate investigating how job complexity affects employee well-being, skill utilization and productivity

Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Manchester, ENGLAND
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 14 Feb 2024

The Productivity Institute (TPI) (Website ) brings together world-leading and UK researchers from a range of disciplines and backgrounds, working directly with policymakers and businesses to better understand, measure, and enable improvements in productivity across the whole of the UK, with the aim of improving living standard and well-being. The project will also be undertaken in collaboration with the Work & Equalities Institute (WEI) at AMBS (Website ). The Alliance Manchester Business School’s research combines business and management research with broader science, social science and humanities approaches.

The Research Associate will work on a project investigating how job complexity affects employee well-being, skill utilization and productivity. Job complexity has been identified as an important factor that can enhance skill development and well-being, both of which are important precursors of productivity. However, there has been little systematic analysis of whether these gains are only realised in certain organisational conditions or national institutional contexts (e.g., strong trade unions). Addressing these issues is important because it helps to develop a more nuanced picture of the productivity puzzle in the UK. Indeed, a particular emphasis in the project will be to compare the effects of job complexity in the UK to other economies and to consider the practical and policy recommendations for the UK.

The aims of this research are (1) To examine the effects of job complexity on skill use, well-being and productivity (2) To establish the extent to which the effects of job complexity are contingent on national institutional, sectoral and organisational factors (3) To compare the effects of job complexity in the UK to other countries?

You will be responsible for the development of statistical measures and models to undertake the research and in the writing of reports and/or academic journal articles. Other activities will involve the broader dissemination of research findings to policy/practitioner and academic audiences.

What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers
