The Mixed-methods Digital Oral History project will focus on bringing together experienced researchers in the UK and Germany to ask how semantic web technologies, historical-interpretative analysis and digital research methods can be mobilised and interfolded to foment a ‘digital methodological-hermeneutical turn’ in oral history research. Positioning the emerging sub-field of the history of Digital Humanities as an exemplary case study for this research, this project will seek to understand the impacts that digital technology is making on the production, organisation and ‘peoplescapes’ of Humanities knowledge (and vice versa). The project will generate new historical knowledge and about the processes of formation, disruption and change that have underpinned the take up of technology in the wider Humanities, leading to the field now known as Digital Humanities. This advertised role offers an exciting opportunity for researchers to work with experts and communities to pursue research on semantic web technologies and digital methods with the aim to describe the meaning and the connections among data, to define concepts, persons, places, and other relevant entities and to facilitate retrieval, data integration, and network analysis.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD degree in Information Science, Digital Humanities, Computer Science or related discipline (or about to complete) or equivalent research experience; a proven ability and commitment to carry out high quality original research, and experience in managing their own academic research and administrative activities, involving small scale project management and co-ordinating multiple aspects of work to meet deadlines; experience with Triple Stores and Knowledge Graphs, Semantic web technologies and formats, FAIR Data and Linked Data, and a good understanding of network analysis methods and Ontologies and Ontological Engineering; familiarity with oral history research and relevant methodologies, and data visualisation tools, and experience of working with digital humanities data.
