Research Associate in Pure Mathematics (fixed-term)

This a 12 month research position to work with Dr Daniel Loughran on his Future Leaders Fellowship titled "Geometric Analytic Number Theory".

About the role:

We are looking for researchers with expertise in algebraic geometry, algebraic topology, or number theory, with specific topics in the research programme including:

  • Arithmetic statistics
  • Applications of homological stability in arithmetic geometry
  • Existence and distribution of rational points on varieties (the Hasse principle and Manin's conjecture)
  • Arithmetic of abelian varieties and moduli stacks

The position comes with substantial travel funds and no teaching obligations. They also include relocation expenses and equipment expenses (e.g. Laptop).

You will be a highly motivated individual who will contribute well to the research project itself and to the department as a whole, and be expected to disseminate the results in leading academic journals and conferences.

About us:

The Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Bath is internationally renowned and covers the full spectrum of mathematics, with over 70 academic staff.

You will join the Algebra, Geometry, and Number Theory group which is active in algebraic and differential geometry, group theory, representation theory, and number theory. The group has a weekly seminar which you will be able to participate in.

Dr Loughran is in the process of creating a new centre for number theory at Bath. 

You will join our highly active team which currently includes 6 PhD students and 2 postdocs. 

We have a weekly team meeting where we study together recent papers and topics of interest. 

We have close connections with other number theory groups in the UK including those in Bristol, Warwick, Glasgow, Oxford, and London.

Despite there being no teaching obligations, for candidates wishing to gather more teaching experience, the departmental allows postdoctoral researchers to lecture courses at an undergraduate or postgraduate level. Any such arrangement could be flexible and done as a team.
