Applications are invited for the post of Research Associate in Neutrino Physics.

This is a post to work on the development of data acquisition (DAQ) systems for the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) in the USA. DUNE is a future long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. The Royal Holloway group has leading roles in DUNE and the DUNE DAQ consortium. 

The post holder will participate in the design and development of the DAQ, focussing on control, configuration, and monitoring aspects.

The post holder will also contribute to the testing of the DAQ in detector test stands at Royal Holloway, CERN, Fermilab, and other institutions within the DAQ consortium.

They may contribute to physics research at DUNE.  

The post holder will also contribute to the research life of the group through collaboration with postgraduate students, other research associates, and academics.

The holder of this post will be expected to help produce independent and original research, to submit publications to refereed journals, and to work together with and supervise Masters and PhD students.

The post holder will have the following essential skills and experience:

  • PhD in Experimental Particle Physics or closely related field (Research Associate level) OR soon to attain a PhD in Experimental Particle Physics or closely related field OR Master’s level degree in computer science (Research Assistant level)
  • Knowledge  of C++ and python
  • Knowledge of modern software environments such as git, high performance computing environments, and containers
  • Effective communication skills
  • Flexibility to adapt to an evolving environment and to work in teams, both as the leader or as a member.
  • A strong record of contributions to a major software project and/or experimental particle physics project

The following skills and experience are also desirable:

  • A strong record of contributions to a major software project and/or experimental particle physics project
  • Demonstrated ability of planning work of a small team, or developers or scientists, of varied expertise, defining milestones and ensuring results are achieved
  • Experience with design and development of distributed computing systems, in particular service-oriented architectures
  • Experience with design and development of control and monitoring of applications distributed over multiple processes and multiple hosts
  • Experience with agile development techniques and continuous integration processes
  • Experience of working on the design and construction of HEP detectors
  • Experience of working in the environment of a large international science collaboration

The duration of the post is until 30 Sept 2025 in the first instance, with the possibility of extension subject to the availability of funding.   The post holder will be employed for the duration of the post by Royal Holloway, University of London, which offers a highly competitive rewards and benefits package including generous annual leave.
