Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 2 years in the first instance.
A position exists for Research Associate in 21-cm Cosmology Data Analysis and Interpretation.
The aim of the role is to study the early epochs of the Universe (Dark Ages, Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Re-ionization) via analysis of the 21-cm line from atomic Hydrogen. With several promising experiments (both single antenna and interferometric) attempting the detection and the study of the 21-cm hyperfine transition, this is currently one of the hottest areas of cosmology studies. The postholder will work on analysing the data from the radio telescopes using advanced Bayesian pipelines, aiming at the elusive detection. Furthermore, a successful candidate will be expected to interpret the data and constrain state of the art theoretical models of the cosmology and astrophysics governing the early epochs of the Universe.
We are looking for an enthusiastic researcher to work on analysis and astrophysical interpretation of the data coming out of the 21-cm cosmology experiments we are currently working on (e.g. REACH, project funded by an ERC Consolidator grant via UKRI funding and where Cambridge is the lead institution, and HERA). The successful candidate will work within a multidisciplinary team of astronomers, physicists, and engineers. They could also join other related efforts, such as the development of data pipelines for the Square Kilometre Array 21-cm experiments or the CosmoCube space mission, as well as to develop their own research.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD (or close to obtaining) in physics, astronomy or closely related area with a proven track record in radio cosmology. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in 21-cm cosmology as demonstrated by publications in major journals. A solid understanding of Bayesian statistics is desired. The candidate will also have the ability to communicate effectively its own research and to perform relevant tasks for the projects they will work on, including liaising with academic partners, organisation of meetings, etc.
The post holder will be part of the Cavendish Radio Cosmology group (www.cavendishradiocosmology.com ), located at the Department of Physics, Cavendish Laboratory, JJ Thomson Avenue, Cambridge, CB3 0HE.
Research Associate: £36,024 - £44,263 (Grade 7). Appointment at Research Associate level is dependent on having a PhD. Those who have submitted but not yet received their PhD will initially be appointed as a Research Assistant (Grade 5, Point 38 - £32,982) moving to Research Associate (Grade 7) upon confirmation of your PhD award.
