We are looking for an experienced mixed methods researcher whose expertise and interest lies in the generation and analysis of both qualitative and quantitative education data, to work in the Observatory for Mathematical Education. The Observatory for Mathematical Education is a collaboration between the School of Education and the School of Mathematical Sciences and will generate state-of-the-art, evidence-driven, and policy-relevant research to improve mathematics education, learner outcomes and longer-term benefits for individuals and society. Its remit stretches through primary and secondary education, to undergraduate study and postgraduate research in mathematics.
The Observatory will explore how learner pathways and outcomes in mathematics education are impacted by social background, institutions, locations, policies, interventions, time, curriculum, teaching, parents and peer groups, through the analysis of secondary datasets (e.g. the National Pupil Database) and primary data generated by the Observatory’s longitudinal cohort studies. It will also undertake additional evaluation and intervention projects in mathematics education.
We believe that our talented and inclusive teams deliver the highest quality research and are seeking applications from quality candidates who enhance the diversity of our existing team. The Observatory is committed to creating opportunities for people traditionally under-represented in mathematical education research and strives to maintain an environment where people can be their authentic selves.
You will be able to carry out research of a high standard, and evidence, through your experience, how you will undertake original research of international excellence. It will be key that you prepare your work for publication in leading journals and contribute to its distribution at national and international meetings.
This position is available from 1 February 2024 [or as soon as possible thereafter]. Hours of work are full-time (36.25 hours) ; however applications are also welcome from candidates wishing to work part-time (minimum 21.75 hours per week). Please specify in your application if you wish to work part time and the number of preferred hours. We are open to discussing flexible working arrangements with you though work may involve travel to research sites across England.
This position is a permanent with underlying funding role until 31st October 2028. With possible extension subject to funding.
If it sounds like you would be a good fit, we look forward to hearing from you.
