About the Role
Applicants are invited for a part-time Research Assistant role in the Centre for Advanced Robotics @ Queen Mary (ARQ), School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS), Queen Mary University of London (QMUL). You will be employed to work in the ERC-funded project EndoTheranostics and will be under the supervision of Prof. Kaspar Althoefer. You will be responsible for research activities and the development of soft robotic prototypes and closely work with the other partners of this project, in Turin, Naples and London.
About You
The successful candidate will have a master’s degree and a strong background in robotics, mechanical engineering or a similar engineering field. The job requires an in-depth knowledge about soft inflatable/eversion robotics, sensor data acquisition and processing, computer and system interfacing, as well as experience in documenting and reporting on design developments, including disseminating key research findings. You will support the development of soft/eversion robotic prototypes for medical applications, working on software and hardware aspects for soft/eversion robots operating in remote locations, ultimately achieving fully functional prototypes.
You will work in a team within the research group and with the project’s other partners, onsite and remotely, and must demonstrate research skills and the ability to prepare required project deliverables.

SEMS has approximately 100 academic staff, 45 administrative and technical staff and 45 postdoctoral research staff. There are around 1800 undergraduate and taught postgraduate students and 220 PhD students. The staff and student body are international in make-up.
The School of Engineering & Materials Science holds a Bronze Athena SWAN Charter for Women in Science and is a registered member of WISE.
About Queen Mary
At Queen Mary University of London, we believe that a diversity of ideas helps us achieve the previously unthinkable.
Throughout our history, we’ve fostered social justice and improved lives through academic excellence. And we continue to live and breathe this spirit today, not because it’s simply ‘the right thing to do’ but for what it helps us achieve and the intellectual brilliance it delivers.
Our reformer heritage informs our conviction that great ideas can and should come from anywhere. It’s an approach that has brought results across the globe, from the communities of east London to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro.
We continue to embrace diversity of thought and opinion in everything we do, in the belief that when views collide, disciplines interact, and perspectives intersect, truly original thought takes form.
Benefits
In return, we offer 30 days’ leave per annum, access to a pension scheme, a season ticket loan scheme and competitive salaries. We also offer enhanced family friendly leave, and an on-site nursery at the Mile End campus. You will also work with a friendly team, with personal development opportunities.
Queen Mary’s commitment to our diverse and inclusive community is embedded in our appointments processes. Reasonable adjustments will be made at each stage of the recruitment process for any candidate with a disability.
