Offer Description

An early-stage researcher (ESR) position funded by European Commission H2020 / Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions, as part of the EU Innovative Training Network SMABEYOND Consortium, is available under the supervision of Dr Haiyan Zhou, Professor Giovanni Baranello and Professor Francesco Muntoni at Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health, UCL. The aim of the project is to characterize the microvascular defects in spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) and the response to novel drug treatment. The ESR will also explore the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in vascular defects in SMA, by using means of various molecular technologies in close collaboration with other EU partners. The post is available until 30th September 2024.

Skills/Qualifications

The ESR needs to hold a MSc or equivalent in relevant discipline, with relevant experience in molecular and cell biology and proven research aptitude.

Since the entire program is in English, ESRs must demonstrate that their ability to understand and express themselves in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high.

The candidate is expected to have an excellent attention to detail, enthusiastic in science, and highly self-motivated and hard working.

Specific Requirements

The ESR needs to be in his/her first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers, without a PhD degree. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree which formally entitles them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in the country in which the research training is provided, irrespective of whether or not a doctorate was envisaged.

International mobility: ESRs are required to undertake trans-national mobility when taking up the appointment. For this position, the ESR must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the UK for more than 12 months in the 3 years or prior to their PhD registration at UCL – unless as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention.
