Job Purpose

To make a leading contribution to a programme of research on gender, crime and justice within the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research (SCCJR) working with Professor Michele Burman. To lead on writing publications, support project development as needed, and contribute to the wider objectives of SCCJR.

The postholder will  have expert knowledge in criminal justice responses to rape and/or domestic abuse, women’s experiences of criminal justice, and expertise in qualitative analytical techniques.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

Perform the following activities in conjunction with and under the guidance of the Principal/Co Investigator:

1.   Plan and conduct assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with project deliverables and project research strategy.

2.   Document research output including coding, analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.

3.   Take a role in designing research deliverables for project funders.

4.   Develop and enhance your research profile and reputation and that of The University of Glasgow including contributing to publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.

5.   Contribute to the presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.

6.   Contribute to the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.

7.   Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops across the research Group/School/College/University and wider community.

8.   Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.

9.   Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.

10. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.

11. Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.

12. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.

For appointment at grade 7

13. Perform the above duties with a higher degree of independence, leadership and responsibility, particularly in relation to planning, funding, collaborating and publishing research, and mentoring colleagues.

14 Establish and sustain a track record of independent and joint published research to establish and maintain your expert reputation in the subject area.

15. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project & subject area, & develop/implement a suitable research strategy.

16.Take a leading role in the identification of potential funding sources and assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies, planning and developing a line of research activities.

Qualifications

Essential

A1 SCQF Level 11 (Postgraduate Masters degree) in a discipline relevant to criminology (e.g. sociology; social policy etc.).

A2 Specialist theoretical and/or practical knowledge of gender crime and justice

A3. Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in specialist subject and of research methods and techniques, in particular qualitative data analysis (e.g. NVivo, Excel)

For appointment at grade 7

A4 Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) (or close to submission) or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s)

Desirable

B1 Competence in basic quantitative research design and analytical techniques.

B2 Knowledge of specialist IT software as appropriate.

Knowledge, Skills 

Essential

C1 Skills in the coding and analysis of qualitative data, using NVivo or similar.

C2. Ability to analyse and organise resources in order to manage time and workload effectively.

C3 Research creativity and strong cross-discipline collaborative ability relating to gender, crime and justice.

C4 Excellent communication skills (oral and written) including public presentations and ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and concisely

C5 Excellent interpersonal skills including team working and a collegiate approach

C6 Ability to apply policy, practice and procedures including broader University/sector external (e.g. commercial) awareness.

C7 Proven initiative and judgement to resolve problems independently and/or as part of a team.

C8 Appropriate workload/time/project/budget/people management skills

C9 IT and data analysis/interpretation skills as appropriate.

C10 Self motivation, initiative and independent thought/working

For appointment at grade 7

C11 A comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of current issues and future directions within the wider subject area or subject specialism

C12 Knowledge of project specific models or techniques

C13 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience, normally including sufficient postdoctoral experience in a related field, appropriate to an early career researcher

E1 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience

E2 Experience of planning and progressing work activities within professional guidelines or organisational policy, applying initiative and independent judgement.. E3 Ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.

E4 A track record of presentation and publication of research results in quality journals/conferences

E5 Experience of making a leading contribution in academic activities

E6 Ability to demonstrate a degree of independence as illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of the literature, design & analysis of experiments & drafting of papers.

E7 Experience in undertaking independent research

Desirable

F1 An emerging national or international reputation in research.

F2 A track record of presentation and publication of research results in quality journals and/ or at conferences

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 6/7, £32,332 - £36,024  £39,347 - £44,263 per annum; pro-rata for part-time appointments.

This post is full-time (35 hours per week, Monday - Friday),  and has funding until 5th September 2024. We are also happy to consider part time hours - if this is your preference, please note this in your cover letter.
