The post is funded by the DT Prime and EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account to develop a photonic machine vision platform.

At Research Associate level: To carry out research programmes in photonic neuromorphic machine vision, undertake project management and/or supervise multi-disciplinary teams. The Research Associate will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals and to attract external research funding.


Duties and responsibilities

Main Duties:

  • Characterisation of photonic networks to identify and develop suitable techniques, and apparatus, for the collection and analysis of data.
  • Develop high-throughput photonic machine vision platforms.
  • Assist with the analysis of data.
  • Ensure the validity and reliability of data at all times.
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of all findings.
  • Assist with the writing of reports to research sponsors.
  • Present findings to colleagues.
  • Provide advice to other staff and students.
  • Assist with the publication of findings.
  • Attend relevant workshops and conferences as necessary.
  • Develop contacts within the College and the wider community.
  • Promote the reputation of the Group, the Department and the College.

Essential requirements

At Research Associate level: Hold a PhD (or equivalent) in photonic networks or a closely related discipline.

At Research Assistant level: A masters degree (or equivalent) in in photonic networks or a closely related discipline.

Experience & Knowledge:

  • Practical experience within a research environment and / or publication in relevant and refereed journals commensurate with career stage.
  • Experience with machine vision.
  • Practical experience in a broad range of techniques including building optical setups, controlling lab equipment remotely and coding machine learning.
  • Knowledge of photonic networks.
  • Knowledge of research methods and statistical procedures.
  • Knowledge of machine vision.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Ability to conduct a detailed review of recent literature.
  • Ability to develop and apply new concepts.
  • Creative approach to problem-solving

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be a appointed as a Research Assistant, within the salary range £40,694 and £43,888 per annum.
