Job description

The Project Manager for the Gene Therapy Vector Facility (GTVF) group at King's College of London (comprising of the facilities, at Guys and St Thomas, Kings College London and Kings College Hospital), is a new role which will have responsibility for leading internal and external projects.  The GTVF group is part of Core Research Platforms within the university’s Research Management & Innovation Directorate (RMID) the post holder will work closely with colleagues in this section and also with other professional services directorates as necessary.

This role will report to the Head of Projects and will be working closely with GTVF Management Team, i.e. Operations Director, Head of Production, Head of Quality, Head of Process Development and Head of Business Development.

​The Project Manager will lead on assigned projects which can be a mix of client projects or internal projects, working closely with colleagues from across the GTVF group, leading a matrix multi-disciplinary team with direction from the Head of Project Management in management practice and working closely with the Heads of Business Development, Production, Quality and Process Development to ensure projects are delivered successfully.

​The successful candidate will be responsible for developing the project management plan for assigned projects with input from the matrix team assigned to that project, which incorporates the deliverables required by the client as agreed in the contract. They will be responsible for monitoring the plan, and tracking of deliverables, coordinating regular project updates to clients and stakeholders, chairing meetings with clients and documenting minutes and actions.

The job holder must possess a proven work experience or professional knowledge in the field of manufacturing and/or testing of biological products to comprehend and communicate highly complicated information clearly and precisely, helping our customers and stakeholders to understand the whole context of the project and to take both collaborative and independent project decisions of a high impact.

This is an unique and impactful role in which the successful candidate will be a key member in delivering innovative advanced therapies for clients and collaborators and contributing to the success of the Advanced Therapies cluster.

This post will be offered on an indefinite contract.

This is a full-time post - 100% full time equivalent.


Key responsibilities

Communication and Networking

  • Regularly communicate information in a clear and precise way 
  • Receive, comprehend and disseminate in variety of methods information of a very complicated or abstract nature which typically would not be clear to those unfamiliar with the subject matter.  
  • Build strong working relationships with members of the GTVF functional groups, supporting Project Team and Head of Business Development as necessary, to ensure an effective communication and collaboration withing the facility. 
  • Manage a varied portfolio of academic and industrial clients, by developing a deep knowledge of the clients’ projects and requirements and establishing an efficient communication platform  
  • Negotiate with Team Leaders, Senior Management and stakeholders to ensure objectives are met. 
  • Develop relationships across the sector, and represent the University externally as required. 

Governance

  • Monitor the progress of each project against the plan.  Report to the leadership team where concerns that affect project delivery are occurring.   
  • Coordinate and prepare periodic reports to support clients who have grant funded projects to highlight progress against plan and risks 
  • Maintain a project risk log for all projects with appropriate mitigation plans

Decision Making, Planning & Problem Solving

  • Create detailed integrated project plans and implement project governance to successfully manage projects and programmes.   
  • Ensure project team contribute to and have the detail to make key decisions enabling projects to be agile and successfully delivered 
  • Lead discussions with project teams to solve problems, ensuring solutions are considered and actions agreed upon. 

Teamwork

  • Lead the forming of high performing project teams.   
  • Support team leaders and team members in the analysis of the plan, ensuring preparation activities are being considered and devising strategies to deliver the project. 
  • Build and lead a network of both internal and external relationships to deliver an outcome, positively influencing business relations with the new and returning customers  
  • Identifying challenges and resolving misalignment within the project team.

Skills, knowledge, and experience

Essential criteria

  • BSc or MSc in a relevant science or engineering discipline 
  • Experience in working within a GMP environment, preferably in cell and gene therapy or biopharmaceutical industry in functions as such as process development, analytical development, QC or manufacturing 
  • Familiarity with regulatory guidance governing cell-based and biopharmaceutical development  
  • Experience in communicating highly technical information clearly and precisely, leading technical discussions and assess the information to resolve the problems, and progress with the project  
  • Experience in working in a matrix organisation structure, to direct multi-disciplinary team members accountable to deliver the project 
  • Experience in leading internal and external project team meetings to ensure that all stakeholders and the customer are well informed and working in accordance with the agreed project plan. 
  • Ability to act as a single point of contact for operational aspects of the project 
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities 
  • Strong level of work organization, self-motivation, drive for performance and improvement and flexibility in approach and attitude 
  • Ability to work independently and build professional networks 
  • Comfortable representing the institution externally 
  • Desirable criteria

  • PMP or Prince2 desirable. Training/ continual development can be provided to successful candidate.  
  • ​Good understanding of viral vector and cell biology  
  • Experience in use of MS Project.  
  • Experience in managing projects, leading projects following a framework including project definition, project initiation, planning, execution and control (cost, time, quality and risk)  
  • Working knowledge of identifying risks and communicating these to ensure risk mitigation plans are in place
