The University of Southampton is in the top 1% of world universities and is one of the UK’s top 15 research-intensive universities.

Chemical Engineering was recently launched as a new discipline at the University, marked by substantial investments including a £6 million state-of-the-art teaching laboratory and virtual control room facility. Collaboratively developed between the School of Chemistry and the School of Engineering, our undergraduate programs , currently in their third year, are showing strong growth in student enrolment. As an integrated School, we are strategically focused on advancing research at the intersection of our well-established Chemistry strengths and our growing research activities in Chemical Engineering.

About the role

We seek candidates with an internationally recognised academic or industrial profile in an area of Chemical Engineering related to sustainability. We are particularly interested in developing links between reaction engineering and the operando application of analytical techniques, an existing area of strength in chemistry. Most importantly, we wish this senior role to show research leadership and to drive the development of facilities that will allow our research profile in chemical engineering to grow rapidly. This is a balanced pathway role, so contributions to the School will include leadership, research, enterprise and education.

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • Outstanding experience in shaping and leading a field of research.
  • A proven track record in raising significant external research funding.
  • Motivational leadership through research, education and enterprise roles.
  • An ability to inspire students and colleagues.
  • Commitment to improving equality, diversity and inclusion.

What we can offer you

  • A collegiate research-led School in a world-leading University that strongly values education and enterprise.
  • An outstanding research environment with a broad suite of characterisation facilities and excellent collaboration opportunities.
  • Access to sector-leading high performance computing facilities and a university commitment to maintain that sector-leading position.

The University values diversity and equality , and we actively encourage applications from under-represented groups. We are delighted to be holders of the Race Equality Charter Bronze Award 2022, and hold both institutional and departmental Athena SWAN silver awards. We recognise that employees may wish to have working patterns that fit with their caring responsibilities or work-life balance. Due consideration will be given to applicants who have had career breaks for reasons including maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability or illness.

Interviews will take place in person in Southampton. Southampton is well connected – just over an hour from central London and with an international airport, but with beautiful surroundings on the south coast and in the New Forest. Find out more about the University and the city here .
