We are looking for an independent and motivated PhD level graduate in the social sciences to study the use of synthetic biology in environmental applications, exploring the social, ethical, and environmental dimensions of Engineering Biology to inform decision-making and promote the integration of research advances within the broader context of environmental biotechnology.

This post is advertised as part-time (0.5fte, 17.5 hours per week) and we are open to considering flexible working patterns. We are also open to considering requests for hybrid working (on a non-contractual basis) that combines a mix of remote and regular on-campus working. 

The Opportunity:

The successful applicant will assess the potential of synthetic biology in environmental applications. The project will seek to understand the social, economic and environmental impacts of research undertaken in this area. A key aspect of this post will be to ensure this social scientific research informs development of engineering biology for environmental solutions.    

Your skills and attributes for success: 

  • A PhD (or equivalent) in Science and Technology Studies (STS) or cognate field, with training or skills relevant to the project
  • Experience in conducting surveys as well as qualitative interviews and focus groups
  • Knowledge of responsible research and innovation, and its application within a biological and/or engineering context
  • Expertise in relevant data gathering methods and analytical techniques
  • Effective data management and document control
