Working in the Space Photovoltaics research group within the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, under the supervision of Prof. Louise Hirst, you will develop methods for fabricating high-performance III-V photovoltaic devices for space power applications. This will include the fabrication of devices with epitaxially grown III-V films using planar device process techniques.
You will characterise the performance of these devices using precision optical and electrical measurements including dark IV, light IV, EQE and ellipsometry. You will perform optical and device simulation and correlate with measurements to interpret results, diagnose problems and iteratively improve performance.
Key Responsibilities
Research and Scholarship:
- simulation and design of III-V photovoltaic devices;
- fabrication of novel III-V photovoltaic devices and their constituent components;
- characterise the electrical performance of photovoltaic devices;
- undertake correlative simulation to analyse electrical performance;
- support with maintenance, adaptation and safe operation of fabrication and characterisation equipment where required for programme deliverables;
- work with team members to meet specific technical deliverables;
- assist with the preparation of milestone and quarterly reports;
- write up research work for presentation and publication;
Teaching and learning support:
- may assist in the supervision of student projects where the project output contributes towards the goals of the programme;
Liaison and networking:
- liaise with team members and project partners to meet programme objectives and maximum impact from scientific outputs;
- build internal and external contacts and participate in networks for the exchange of information and to form relationships for future collaboration
- develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research;
- conduct individual and collaborative research projects;
Planning and Organising:
- plan the use of research resources, laboratories and workshops as appropriate;
- plan and manage own research activity in collaboration with others; contribute to the planning of joint research projects led by the principal investigator.
