Postdoctoral Research Assistant in High Voltage Cathodes for Next Generation Batteries

Updated: 4 months ago
Location: Oxford, ENGLAND
Deadline: 02 Jan 2024

We have a vacancy for a postdoctoral researcher in novel synthesis methods to make new materials for next-generation Li-ion batteries.  The post is available for up to 12 months as part of an Innovate UK-funded Faraday Battery Challenge project with industry partner Sigma Lithium Ltd.  The successful candidate will be based in the House Group in the Department of Materials and will report to the Principal Investigator, Dr Robert House.

Applicants must have (or be close to completion of) a relevant PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science or Engineering. Appropriate specialist knowledge is desirable in any or all of the following: materials synthesis (including solid-state, co-precipitation, carbothermal reduction and sol-gel), electrochemistry (including slurry-making, casting, cell assembly and cycling) and characterisation (X-ray diffraction, XPS, DEMS, NMR).

The project will be focused on developing novel high voltage cathode materials for next generation rechargeable Li-ion batteries. Candidate materials based on the spinel and olivine structures will be synthesised, characterised using a range of advanced tools and their performance as battery cathodes evaluated. The research aim will be to establish a greater understanding of the stability of cathode materials at high voltages and their reactivity with novel high voltage electrolytes. The project will involve working closely with Sigma Lithium Ltd. to deliver prototype cells.

All applications must be made online using the Oxford University E-Recruitment system, no later than 12 noon on 2 January 2024. You will be required to upload a CV and a Supporting Statement as part of your application. Please do not attach any manuscripts, papers, transcripts, mark sheets or certificates as these will not be considered as part of your application.

Interviews are scheduled to take place at the Department of Materials on 15 January 2024 and you must be available on this date, either by Teams, Zoom or in person. Please note in normal circumstances only interview travel expenses within the UK will be reimbursed.
