Ref: QMUL11837

Applications are invited for a three-year Institute of BioengineeringPostdoctoral Fellowship to work with Professor Alvaro Mata in the School of Engineering and Materials Science (SEMS) at Queen Mary University of London.

The research combines biological principles with supramolecular chemistry and creative engineering approaches to develop biomaterials with advanced properties such as structural hierarchy, self-healing properties, and the capacity to grow and undergo morphogenesis. Examples include materials based on a) self-assembling peptides, b) disordered proteins, c) guided biomineralization, d) co-assembling molecules, and e) novel printing techniques.

The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Organic Chemistry, Materials Science, Molecular Biology, Engineering or relevant and experience in one or more of the following areas: 1) peptide synthesis and molecular self-assembly, 2) recombinant proteins such as elastin-like proteins, 3) protein-based materials, 4) biomineralization, 5) electrophoresis, or 6) biofabrication.

The project, co-supervised by Professor Wen Wang, Head of School of SEMS, is designed to enable an outstanding candidate to thrive while developing strong scientific and leadership skills. It provides a rare and exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic and highly interdisciplinary group that provides an optimum environment for conducting high-impact cutting edge research, collaborating with world leading groups, and have real impact in patients’ lives.
