Population and ecosystem health is by its nature interdisciplinary. It requires a tight weave of ideas from ecology, epidemiology, and genetics applied across a variety of domains including terrestrial and aquatic ecology, veterinary epidemiology and evolutionary biology.

Urban biodiversity and human respiratory health
Supervisors: Jan Lindstrom , Davide Dominoni , Pablo Capilla-Lasheras , David Anderson
MSc choices: Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases & Antimicrobial Resistance [MSc] , Quantitative Methods in Biodiversity, Conservation & Epidemiology [MSc]
Summary: As much of the world continues to be urbanised rapidly, a very high proportion of the human population encounters natural environment and biodiversity more often in urban green areas and unbuilt patches than in rural habitats. However, over the course of human evolutionary history, the development of our immune system has been linked to the environmental biodiversity, particulaly microbes, and the microbiota of human respiratory system and gut continue to be strongly affected by the environment.
Is encountering reduced microbial diversity in one’s environment associated with an increased risk of allergies and asthma? It is known that prevalence of allergies and asthma are higher in urban than rural areas but there is less research on linking this directly to biodiversity. In this project, the main questions to be addressed in a study area comprising an urban – rural gradient in the Greater Glasgow area and its surroundings are: whether soil and air microbial diversity are reduced and / or otherwise different in urban and rural areas, and whether there is a spatial association of allergy and asthma prevalence and reduced environmental biodiversity.
The student would be working in an inter-disciplinary team of ecologists and health professionals, and the potential wider implications could be improved town planning and conservation biology policies which could benefit both biodiversity and human health.

Integrated PhD programmes (5 years)
Our Integrated PhD allows you to combine masters level teaching with your chosen research direction in a 1+3+1 format.
International students with MSc and PhD scholarships/funding do not have to apply for 2 visas or exit and re-enter the country between programmes. International and UK/EU students may apply.
Year 1
Taught masters level modules are taken alongside students on our masters programmes. Our research-led teaching supports you to fine tune your research ideas and discuss these with potential PhD supervisors. You will gain a valuable introduction to academic topics, research methods, laboratory skills and the critical evaluation of research data. Your grades must meet our requirements in order to gain entry on to your pre-selected PhD research project. If not, you will have the options to pay outstanding MSc fees and complete with masters degree only.
Years 2, 3 and 4
PhD programme with research/lab work, completing an examinable piece of independent research in year 4.
