Are you interested in providing technical support within a scientific laboratory environment? Do you have experience of working under your own initiative and collaboratively within a team?

Then this is an exciting opportunity to join the Division of Natural Sciences in the role of Assistant Technician (Physics). The role of Assistant Technician will use knowledge and experience to solve simple problems independently ensuring the effective day to day operation of facilities and resources, implementing the necessary control measures to ensure a safe working environment. 

The training opportunities and skill developments available have allowed previous employees in similar roles to go on to work within the Met Office, Civil Service, National Physics Laboratory, and other areas.

As an Assistant Technician (Physics) you will:

  • Carry out routine day to day tasks to established guidelines, to achieve team objectives
  • Operate basic equipment, carrying out straightforward maintenance and provide assistance to senior staff supporting more complex equipment
  • Work effectively with others, providing straightforward, basic technical advice 
  • Understand, promote and apply relevant COSHH/risk assessments and departmental health and safety protocols ensuring procedures are followed at all times
  • Maintain accurate records of work undertaken, inputting data, fault logging and maintenance of databases using appropriate IT systems and software 

To be successful in this role you will have/be:

  • GCSEs (A-C) or equivalent, including passes in Maths and English 
  • Ability to deal flexibly with a wide range of technically demanding situations 
  • Organised with the ability to prioritise a wide range of workload with competing priorities
  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise confidently with students and staff at all levels
