Applications are invited for a mechanical engineering position based at the Cockcroft Institute, Daresbury Laboratory and belonging to the Engineering Department of Lancaster University. A mechanical engineer is sought to participate in SRF crab cavity cryomodules for LHC upgrades. Crab cavities are RF systems that use transverse electromagnetic fields to align bunches prior to collision. Lancaster University, in collaboration with CERN, STFC Daresbury Laboratories, and various US labs have been developing the cavities & cryomodules and are currently in a manufacturing phase. The person will work as part of a team developing these cryomodule systems with a focus on the quality control of cryomodule components and vacuum systems. The job will include defining procedures for QA of components, performing vacuum and lifting tests, checking parts are within mechanical tolerances, visual inspections, dealing with nonconformities, and mechanical design and drawings of tooling. The post may also support RF cavity manufacturing on other projects at Lancaster university.
Ideally you should have a masters degree in mechanical engineering. You will be based at Daresbury Laboratory in the UK but frequent travel to CERN in Switzerland and to suppliers will be necessary. Excellent communication skills are essential. This is a full time post, funded for two years in the first instance.
The appointment will be to university grade 6.
