Updated: 3 months ago
Location: Bath, ENGLAND
Job Type: Permanent
Deadline: ; Full Time, Fixed Term

The Institute for Mathematical innovation (IMI) at the University of Bath invites applications from excellent candidates for three two-year, fixed-term Mathematical Innovation Research Associate (MIRA) positions.

We are looking for a talented and versatile mathematician to work as part of a team of interdisciplinary mathematical researchers at the IMI.

About the role:

As part of the role, you will be expected to work as part of interdisciplinary academic teams to:

  • Provide mathematical expertise to a variety of long-term and short-term projects comprising diverse partnerships;
  • Work at the interface and be a liaison between academics in the Dept. Mathematical Sciences and other partners in academia and industry;
  • Learn about and implement new mathematical skills for interdisciplinary projects;
  • Cultivate your own mathematical identity with a broad base of expertise;
  • Demonstrate leadership through the development of novel data-centric mathematical modelling within other disciplines;
  • Engage in collaborative grant capture and impact acceleration.

We will be recruiting for 3 positions. We will recruit 2 MIRAs with expertise in as many of the following areas as possible, preferably at least two:

  • Interdisciplinary mathematical modelling
  • Machine learning and/or other quantitative modelling in AI
  • Statistical modelling
  • Numerical analysis and scientific computing

We will recruit 1 MIRA with specific expertise in computational science, developing software tools and solutions that support our cutting-edge research in mathematical modelling and data analytics.

MIRA roles are exciting and demanding requiring independence, intellectual flexibility and a proactive, can-do attitude. MIRAs are a core team within IMI that provides expert input into the development of new research ideas and funding bids, in addition to conducting research on collaborative projects involving academics and industry. Come and join our enthusiastic team to collaborate with a wide range of academics from across the university.

We want to develop long-lasting and strategic partnerships with industry and non-academic institutions that result in maximal impact of the mathematical sciences. Health, manufacturing, environment and engineering are just a few of the areas in which we work. The IMI is building partnerships across the academic, international and industrial spectrum, adding value to cutting edge research and its application through mathematical modelling and data analytics. Mathematical Innovation Research Associates are central to these aims and values.

Application info:

Alongside completion of the online application form, it is essential that candidates upload a Curriculum Vitae, and include a statement about research expertise and experience working in multidisciplinary teams and with external partners.

Interviews are planned for early 2023.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr Caroline Ang ([email protected] ) or Prof Tristan Pryer ([email protected]).

We live in the “era of mathematics”, where data, modelling, algorithms and artificial intelligence have become deeply rooted in all aspects of modern society. The Institute for Mathematical Innovation is leading the delivery of multi-disciplinary and mathematically grounded research informed by real-world, societal and industrial challenges. IMI partners with research centres of excellence, EPSRC centres for doctoral training and beyond, collaborating to add value to grant capture, delivery of research activities, driving innovation and impact.

There are close links between IMI and the Department of Mathematical Sciences which has over 70 academic staff from all areas of Mathematics. The department has a strong culture of collaboration across research areas, reinforced by our EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Statistical Applied Mathematics at Bath (SAMBa).
