Magnetic Nano-particles for the separation and purification of proteins

When proteins are synthesised (using a natural or cell-based method), they are contaminated with hundreds of other proteins, nucleic acids and numerous other small molecules. At the moment there are no satisfactory methods for separating these mixtures and obtaining the target protein in high purity. The inability to obtain pure protein and this hinders research into a number of areas; in particular medicine and the development of new pharmaceutical compounds. This project will involve the synthesis of functionalised magnetic Nano-particles designed to bind a single target protein. When these are added to a solution containing a mixture of proteins, the magnetic Nano-particle will bind its target protein, leaving the others free in solution. At this point separation should be very simple. The process will simply involve placing a magnet on the side of the flask, and pouring the solution out. The magnet ensures that all of the Nano-particles and their bound protein remains in the flask, whilst the impurities are simply washed away.

Funding

Applicants should have a scholarship or be self-funded. 

Requirements: At least a 2:1 honours degree or an MSc in Chemistry, or a related subject.
