Lecturer (Teaching) in Mechanical Engineering

About the role

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking to appoint a Lecturer (Teaching) to provide coordination and input to the teaching of subjects including a clear focus on Engineering Mathematics and other areas across our Mechanical Engineering degree programmes.

You will join a team of lecturers delivering a suite of units across our Undergraduate and Postgraduate Taught degrees delivering content primarily to students studying degrees in Mechanical Engineering.

Our teaching is delivered face-to-face, supported by some online content. We are looking for applicants with the expertise and flexibility to teach a broad range of topics in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on Mathematics to Undergraduate students.

You will be expected to design and deliver high quality teaching of undergraduate and/or taught postgraduate modules which is informed by significant experience gained via practice, research/study and teaching experience, to include:

  • Preparation of teaching material; delivery of lectures, seminars, tutorials, studio sessions and group work; 
  • Assessment and marking of coursework, examination papers and dissertations 
  • Providing advice and support to students; 
  • Pastoral care of students, in line with Department and University policy 
  • Supervision of undergraduate or taught postgraduate student projects 
  • Teaching-related management and administration duties 
  • Effective contribution to the University’s wide developments and innovation in the design and delivery of teaching. 
  • A PhD in Mathematics, Engineering, Physics or other similar discipline

This role is advertised on a fixed term basis for a period of 24 months with an expected start date of 1st August 2024 or soon after, ready to teach from 30 September 2024.


About you

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • A PhD in a relevant subject area
  • Depth and breadth of knowledge of Engineering Mathematics and Industrial Design
  • Experience of teaching at undergraduate level using a range of methods
  • Excellent organisational, communication and presentation skills
