Lecturer in Textiles (Part-time role for 18.5 hours per week)

Birmingham City University is a large and diverse place to study right in the heart of the city and we currently have an exciting opportunity for part time Lecturer to join the BA Textile Design team within the College of Jewellery Fashion and Textiles, Arts Design and Media Faculty. Situated in the Parkside Building in the new South Side area of Birmingham, we have excellent facilities in print, weave, embroidery, knit and digital CAD applications (supported by Epson) with state-of-the-art industry standard machinery, and we are but a short walkway from the main transport links across the Midlands. This unique exciting opportunity is for a highly motivated individual looking to advance their career with a specific focus on excellence in craftsmanship and embedding sustainability within textile design education. This new role will support the progressive course team through new approaches in teaching, administration, and recruitment across three-year groups of cohorts around 30 students. The course delivers excellence in craftsmanship across print, weave, knit, embroidery and biomaterials, working on contemporary concepts designing for Body, Space, People and Change. It develops industry-ready graduates who are leaders in their fields. The role will be adaptable to support students’ intent on careers across Fashion, Interior and Lifestyle sectors as entrepreneurs, employees, artists and researchers.

As Lecturer you will design dynamic and inclusive schemes of work integrating studio and workshop activities, delivering theory and practice relating to design innovation and Sustainability appropriate for the textile industry and application. You will plan, prepare, coordinate and deliver engaging lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials for delivery on campus, and organise offsite activities trips and events. 

The successful candidate will hold an undergraduate or post graduate degree and relevant industry experience in a textile related subject, as well as teaching experience at FE or HE level. You will have design industry sector experience, preferably involving Printed Textiles or Knitted Textile design practice, and demonstrate strong IT skills including Microsoft Office and Adobe software InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as skills in visual effects/ video creation/ moving image tools. Experience of immersive and generative technology is desirable.
