Job description
The Department of War Studies wishes to appoint a Lecturer in Strategic Communications Education to join a thriving community of researchers and educators with a high profile also for impact and public engagement. Appointments to the Academic Education Pathway (AEP) are focused on the delivery of education involving support in module design and delivery, collaborating in the production of education-related scholarship and being a part of a leadership community in advancing education pedagogies and delivery.
The successful candidate will contribute to the delivery of teaching in the Department of War Studies at the BA and MA level, particularly to the MA programme in Strategic Communications. The postholder will:
- Cooperate in delivering lectures, seminars and other teaching activities on the core Strategic Communications modules as well as delivering content on other modules as required
- Support the planning and delivery of modules in the Department, including the delivery of appropriate learning material, examine students’ work and supervise BA, MA and PhD student projects.
- Have a commitment to maintaining and furthering the equality, diversity and inclusion work in the department
- Have a commitment to research-led teaching and innovative teaching through conventional means and through e-learning
- Have a commitment to undertaking research and to publishing high-quality scholarship
The postholder will also play a role in the institutional and intellectual development of War Studies and undertake Departmental, School, Faculty and University administrative duties as required.
The Department of War Studies is part of the School of Security Studies and the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy. Key responsibilities
- Take responsibility for the planning, organisation and delivery of both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching activities within the Department
- Undertake teaching on the MA programme in Strategic Communications
- Commit to research-led teaching and cooperate with colleagues in designing, delivering and assessing modules through conventional means and through e-learning
- Commit to developing and furthering a curriculum that is diverse and inclusive
- Develop and use a variety of methods to assess student learning and provide feedback that is timely, relevant and appropriate
- Act as personal tutor to students as agreed with the Senior Tutor and assist with difficulties, e.g. learning support problems.
- Engage in professional development as appropriate to update skills, and to support teaching excellence.
- Carry out administration as requested by the Head of Department such as admissions, recruitment, examinations, attendance, etc.
- Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the Head of Department

Skills, knowledge, and experience
Essential criteria
1. PhD awarded in Communications, Media Studies, Politics, History or other related disciplines with a focus on relevant subject matter
2. Familiarity with theories and practices of political and strategic communications
3. Experience of teaching undergraduate and/or postgraduate students
4. Experience of campus-based and online teaching, indicating experience in innovative pedagogical practices
5. Familiarity with innovative curriculum and teaching design
6. Commitment to contributing to equality, diversity and inclusion efforts
7. Emerging research agenda and proven capacity to relate research to teaching
8. Established communication skills, both oral and written
9. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Desirable criteria
1. Evidence of establishing links with relevant external bodies
2. Experience of working in, or interacting with, governmental department, media, communications agencies/companies
3. Research activities and a portfolio of individual and/or joint research projects
