The person appointed will join the successful and highly motivated University of Worcester Psychology Team.


The post holder will be expected to teach and lead agreed psychology modules, assess students, supervise undergraduate and post-graduate research where appropriate, engage in curriculum development, participate in research and scholarly activity and contribute to the administrative work of the Psychology Unit and Institute of Health and Society.



All staff contribute to the BPS accredited undergraduate degrees and it is essential that the appointee is able to adopt a flexible approach to the subjects they teach. However, we are particularly interested in recruiting someone with interests that lie in the fields of Health and/or Coaching Psychology to contribute to undergraduate and post-graduate developments in these areas.



Selection Process:



Candidates are required to adopt the role of a Psychology Lecturer at University of Worcester and to facilitate a fifteen-minute teaching session to a small group of current staff and students.



Candidates may select a Psychology topic of their choice and may structure the session as they wish but it is expected that a student-centred approach is taken. As the teaching session takes place over a short period of time, it is suggested that one or two concepts are covered in-depth with a clear introduction, presentation, learning activities, conclusion and references. Candidates are advised to be conservative with the breadth of their Intended Learning Outcomes and strictly adhere to their allocated time. Learning activities are required and should be student-centred and interactive. Examples include role playing, case study review, collaborative design, group problem solving.



You will be expected to demonstrate learning and teaching skills suitable for a lecturing post at the University of Worcester and show a suitable depth of understanding of your chosen topic. It would also be expected that you demonstrate a familiarity with key academic sources relating to the topic presented.



Once the teaching session has concluded, there will be an opportunity for staff to ask questions related to your teaching.

The Institute of Health and Society



The Institute of Health and Society is one of six academic departments at the University of Worcester, based on the Henwick Grove Campus. It has a growing course and research portfolio and is increasing its student numbers year on year. Other growing areas within the Institute include Criminology, Dementia and Domestic Violence. The Institute works collaboratively with the other departments of the University, in particular with the Institute of Education and the Institute of Sport and Exercise Science, as well as external partners. There are strong international links and world-wide opportunities for student and staff exchanges.



The Psychology Unit



The Psychology team deliver psychology programmes both at Undergraduate and Postgraduate level. The current undergraduate programmes have grown significantly over recent years to over 700 students and the Unit also has successful Postgraduate programmes in Occupational/ Business Psychology, Counselling Psychology and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing.



Psychology is well established at the University of Worcester, particularly at undergraduate level. Undergraduate programmes currently provided include BSc Psychology, BSc Clinical Psychology, BSc Forensic Psychology, BSc Developmental Psychology, BSc Sport and Exercise Psychology and BSc Business Psychology. All Single and Major Honours pathways are BPS accredited for GBC. The Unit has recently performed well in the National Student Survey, achieving overall satisfaction of 86%..The psychology team have special interests in applied psychology and have a good publication record and thriving consultancy base.



Strategically the team now aim to enhance their postgraduate work, enhancing both their postgraduate provision and their research profile.



Main duties

Main duties

1. To participate (with others) in the delivery of a range of modules to suit the expertise of the candidate.

2. To demonstrate innovative approaches to teaching and support for students through the use of a wide range of learning resources and appropriate pedagogic practice. 

3. To provide a high quality contribution to the development of undergraduate and where appropriate postgraduate programmes (including preparation of course documentation). 

4. To ensure that teaching is informed by contemporary research in the relevant field and develops the ability of students to engage in debate, critical discourse and rational thinking. 

5. To carry out research and scholarly work. 

6. To develop peer mentoring as a mechanism of student support within psychology programmes. 

7. To, where appropriate, undertake or contribute to consultancy and knowledge transfer work, including income generation. 

8. To build and maintain collaborative networks related to the post within and external to the University and the Institute. 

9. To supervise undergraduate Psychology Research Projects and, where appropriate postgraduate students. 

10. To act as personal/academic tutor to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students. 

11. To contribute to the promotion and external profile of the University. This involves participation in visit/open days, undertaking administrative duties and participating in relevant committees within the institute and university as directed by the Head of Institute. 

12. To undertake personal professional development in support of teaching, scholarship and applied research. 

13. To undertake administrative duties and participate in relevant agendas/committees within the institute and university as directed by the Head of Institute.

Essential Criteria

1. A first degree/post-graduate qualification conferring Graduate Membership with GBC of the British Psychological Society.

2. A PhD or Equivalent Post Graduate qualification in an area appropriate to the post. 

3. Experience of teaching or clear evidence of an ability to teach excellently at HE level, or experience of professional training at an appropriate level.

4. Experience of or a professional qualification in coaching and/or mentoring. 

5. Ability to engage in / develop high quality research, specifically in the areas of Health and/or Coaching Psychology. 

6. Evidence of publication and/or scholarly work consistent with career stage. 

7. Ability to communicate confidently and clearly with a wide range of people, both orally and in writing. 

8. Effective team working and interpersonal skills. 

Desirable Criteria  

1. Chartered Psychologist status (or eligibility for Chartered status) and Registration with the HCPC or with the BPS Register of Coaching Psychologists. 

2. A teaching qualification or Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.*

3. Experience of teaching and/or making presentations to an academic audience. 

4. Experience of academic administration. 

5. Willingness to teach psychology to other discipline areas. 

6. Eligibility for REF 2020. 

*Newly appointed staff who do not already hold HEA professional recognition or a HE teaching qualification, will be required to achieve this within three years of their appointment to the post, either through completion of the PG Cert Learning and Teaching in HE, or for those with significant experience of teaching in HE, via the University’s accredited CPD scheme conferring Fellowship at the appropriate level.
