The School of Arts, Languages and Cultures at the University of Manchester invites applications for a permanent post in Japanese Studies which is housed in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures. The School (SALC) contains one of the UK’s largest concentrations of high-quality research and teaching in languages and cultures, linguistics, and translation studies. This post in Japanese Studies is a teaching & research position, which requires the post-holder to contribute to the Department’s international reputation of academic excellence by delivering high-quality research and publications. Further, the successful candidate will be asked to contribute to teaching activities, including undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes, as stipulated by the Head of Department. The candidate must be able to provide course development for new and existing undergraduate and postgraduate taught course units around their research interests to complement the current teaching portfolio. The post holder is expected to provide high quality teaching. including language teaching. Finally, the post holder will be required to contribute to academic administration and management, appropriate to their career level.

We welcome applications from candidates with a PhD &  research expertise in any aspect of Japanese Studies other than linguistics or religious studies, encouraging applications from candidates who can teach on Korea as well as Japan. Applicants should note that the Japanese Studies undergraduate programme focuses on modern Japan (with a degree of flexibility to accommodate limited teaching about earlier periods within course units). Only applicants with high quality publications will be considered. Evidence of grant capture and experience of curriculum development and developing teaching materials are highly desirable. The post is tenable from September 1st 2024.
