King’s Centre for International Education and Languages is a new, cross-cutting Centre designed to widen the educational reach of King’s. It brings together three existing areas: King’s Foundations, Summer Programmes, and King’s Language Centre. This brings together international pathway provision, pre sessional programmes, pre-UG summer courses, UG summer modules, UG language modules, bespoke language programmes for the community and our partners and academic skills provision for all King’s students.

Each of these areas are well established, respected and recognised within and beyond the King’s community. The Centre is focused on enabling collaboration between the three departments to further advance our work in promoting educational excellence and supporting and enhancing the student experience. The Centre has significant expertise in International Education and makes a significant contribution to the rich and diverse make-up of the King’s student body.

About King’s Foundations

King’s Foundations is a leading centre for English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and pathway education across the HE sector, accredited by the British Council. As one of the largest providers of pathway education, we welcome over 2,500 students each year across our King’s International Foundation Programmes and our range of Pre-sessional Programmes. King’s Foundations is also responsible for the delivery of Academic Skills support across the university providing in person, online, and asynchronous programmes for students studying on all undergraduate and postgraduate programmes at King’s.  In addition, we offer an increasing number of short courses in English language learning and teaching.

Our mission is to support a diverse group of learners to achieve their potential at King’s, supporting students to become independent and inquisitive learners. King’s Foundations is home to approximately 80 permanent staff, growing to around 150 during our busy summer months.  We champion a forward-thinking approach to education and take a digitally-enabled approach across all aspects of education. Over the last 6 years, the department has seen significant planned growth in support of King’s Vision 2029, with annual income of over £20m.


About the Role
THIS VACANCY IS OPEN TO KING’S FOUNDATIONS APPLICANTS ONLY.

We have 2 posts available and we are looking for an experienced and suitably qualified Lecturer in EAP Education and EAP Module Leader and a Lecturer in EAP Education and AECT Module Leader to join King’s Foundations a successful, friendly and thriving department located in the heart of London and the university.

The AECT module is currently under a period of review, and the new module leader will be required to lead a significant reconfiguration of this module to ensure it continues to meet the unique needs of students undertaking this module on the programme.

As module leader you will normally lead on the annual development and delivery of the AECT or EAP module for Level 3 students on the King’s International Foundation.  You will ensure that the content of the module is delivered at an appropriate level, with a focus on the knowledge and skills required for relevant UG degrees at King’s.

This module provides the foundations for studying a range of King’s undergraduate programmes across all Faculties at King’s, and helps students become engaged, independent and critical learners.

The module leader is responsible for completing all associated assessment, quality assurance and administrative duties for the module.

They will take a lead on the development and teaching on the module and deliver other teaching associated with the module or other relevant provision.

You will also provide academic and pastoral support as personal tutor to a group of tutees, some of whom may be under-18. Please note that an enhanced check by the Disclosure and Barring Service is a prerequisite for this role.

You will also be a line manager responsible for supporting the wellbeing and development of a team of teaching staff.

King’s Foundations is based in the iconic Bush House, a Grade II listed building that formerly housed the BBC World Service, but you may be required to work on any of the King’s campuses, or from home.

Please note that it is likely this role will be required to teach on the 6-week Pre-sessional programme (July-August), but will depend on an individual's workload allocation.  This means that annual leave during this time is normally not permitted.


About You

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • TEFLQ status according to British Council accreditation guidelines (e.g. through possession of a Level 7 Diploma in English language teaching). We will consider applicants who are currently working towards TEFLQ status.
  • Fellowship of HEA or willingness to complete within probationary period.
  • Relevant postgraduate degree
  • Relevant teaching experience, ideally on courses developing English language proficiency for undergraduate study such as foundation year programmes or Pre-sessionals.
  • Experience of high-quality materials design/ development including innovative uses of technology to enhance teaching and learning
  • Experience of different types of education delivery relevant to the module.
  • Experience of developing Academic English language assessment and assessment related tasks appropriate to testing English language proficiency.
  • Experience of, or strong interest in, the development of an inclusive curriculum
  • Experience of line management or supporting the development and support of colleagues.
