Lead Copywriter

Hult International Business School (London, UK)

Do you love colorful people and hate beige copy? If your words are packed with personality, you can simplify the most complex of topics into digestible chunks, wash it all down with refreshing storytelling, and you relish working with people from different cultures, backgrounds, and disciplines—then we have an opportunity for you.

As Lead Copywriter, working within our Global Content & Creative Studio and reporting to the Head of Studio, you will:

Be a leader, not a manager

Well, you will be managing people so technically you are a manager and you will be conducting performance reviews but no box tickers, paper pushers, or power-hungry despots please. We want someone with a genuine desire to help other writers—both in-house and freelance—reach their full potential and help create a team of people who enjoy their work and take pride in what they do.

Love collaborating across disciplines

Working closely with other creatives is a given. You understand the importance of the relationship between copy and design (tell us a greater marketing love story...we’ll wait) and you bounce off other’s ideas. You actively seek out the perspectives of different disciplines, from natural bedfellows like brand experience, marketers, events managers, social media, and sales teams to less closely related disciplines like the academic and campus teams.

Enjoy educating colleagues on your craft and advocate for your discipline

You know how it is; everyone has an opinion on copy. Taking the input from a wide range of stakeholders, all with different perspectives and objectives, and bringing it together into coherent, compelling copy that resonates with customers—well, that is often the hardest part of the job. While you welcome constructive feedback and jump at the chance to collaborate, you have the confidence to fight copy’s corner, advocate for the customer, and ultimately do what’s best for the business.

Turn your hand to anything

From three-word banner ads to thousand-word blogs—if it needs words, you can write them. We’re talking emails, landing pages, blogs, digital ad campaigns, organic social posts, fifty-page brochures, and punchy postcards. Video script? No problem. Event invite? Send it your way! The CMO’s nephew’s CV? Absolu...actually it’s a no on that one.

Have a passion for proofing

Grammarly is great but typos are a no-no. You’re not a grammar pedant (Yes, you can start a sentence with “and”) but you know the difference between what reads well and what’s just plain wrong and you can spot a spelling mistake at fifty paces. Style guides are your bedtime reading.

Have a versatile voice within a consistent brand

We are a business school. Boring and stuffy we aren’t, clever and credible we are. Different contexts will call for different tonalities, so you need to understand what’s appropriate and when while retaining a distinctive and consistent brand voice. Our audience is mostly non-native English speakers, so you’ll need to prioritize clear over cute and always have an eye on idioms. You’ll own the brand voice, oversee the work of other writers to ensure quality and consistency, and work with the Head of Studio and other stakeholders to make sure that copy is a key part of the brand experience.

Have creativity that extends beyond words

Yes, words are your thing, your safe space. But it’s ideas that really get your creative juices flowing. You’re not here just to execute on briefs, you’re here to help shape and evolve the brand. From unexpected creative concepts to experimenting with new formats to pushing the boundaries on brand voice—you’re here to make an impact.

Be an organization octopus

Big projects, little projects, digital, print, and video projects. In-house writers, freelance writers, and would-be writers. It’s a lot to juggle. You should be comfortable with having lots of balls in the air at once and be able to effectively manage your time and balance your team’s workload.

Be open to AI tools, but don’t rely on them

Few occupations have been more directly affected by the dawn of generative AI than copywriting. You understand the value of a great human copywriter, but you also know how to use AI tools to save time researching, brainstorming, repurposing, and editing and you’re open to exploring the technology as it evolves. You can spot generic ChatGPT copy a mile off and know how to make sure it doesn’t damage our brand.

Expect flexible working

Based in our (jaw-droppingly gorgeous) office in Chelsea, London, you’ll typically work three days a week in the office and two from home. But if your projects or personal life need you to do more of one sometimes, that’s ok with us.

Have been around the block

6+ years copywriting experience, 2+ in a lead role, diverse portfolio. Salary range: £55-65k. Offers based on experience.
